3 buddies and me went up to Mountain Rest, SC this weekend and camped on the loop trail to the Walhalla Fish Hatchery.
We were able to fish a little bit Thursday night and most of the day Friday. The storm that came Friday night had the Chattooga up 4 ft for Saturday so we packed up and headed out.
We were able to have a nice trout taco supper Friday night. We kept 5 rainbows and 1 brownie. Had no luck on any pattern except the good 'ol black or olive wooly bugger. I mean I tried everything under the sun by doing tandems nymphs, stimulators, matched the caddis hatch perfectly Thursday night but no takers.
Just bought the little 7’ TFO bug launcher 4 weight from CA in Summerville and it worked like a dream on the river. Much easier than trying to flip my 9’ 6 weight around. Very good deal in my opinion.
Anyway, Here are a few pics to show some fish and some scenery. What a great place to go camping and fishing!

ugly stick,
that smallest 'bow in the middle was about 10" or 11". The biggest 1 was about 14"-15". The biggest 'bow and the brown were both pretty fat. They lost a lot of their color by being in our creel bags in the cold water all afternoon.
We caught a few Brooks too… the state record was caught in this same stretch last year… 4# 10 oz.
that record was safe and sound after our trip!

Here is a map showing where we were. Our camping spot is exactly where the east fork meets with the Chattooga
It’s about a 2 mile hike from the Parking area to the fork. Most of our luck was upstream in the Chattooga past the east fork. The pic of me and the guys shows the east fork to the right meeting up with the Chattooga on the left.

Before the Chattooga became so popular, I always like fishing the East Fork and the confluence. Nice tight stream, generally only got one or two good casts to a pool. And nice size trout. Never got close to the (former) 13lb record brown that came out of the main stream, though. LOL.
