My wife and I went up to our family lake house on Canandaigua Lake in NY this past week and got to do a lot of fly fishing. Caught everything I could including rock bass, perch, sunfish, and my first smallmouth OTF!
The bass boat that we have up there was out of commission so I had to fish from the docks and when I got tired of that I took the fly rod out on the jet ski and had a little luck.
The smallmouth was the highlight for me because they put up a great fight. It was pretty tricky landing her because I was standing on a dock that’s about 4 feet above the water line but my bro-in-law ran and grabbed the net to wrap up the fight.
I probably caught around 30-40 rock bass and a handful of perch and sunfish and the one smallmouth. This report probably won’t come into play for most of ya’ll but pretty much the patterns of choice were black or brown wooly buggers and copperheads. I experimented with every fly I had from topwater poppers to chartreusse and olive clousers but they didn’t work near as well. Took the 8 and 6 weight with me and the rock bass aren’t much of a f
Pretty lake.
is the fish in that second pic the rock bass? never seen one of those. smallmouth are fun, never caught one on a fly, but i bet it was great.
I didn’t know you could catch fish that small on a fly j/k
Looks like fun.
I’ve fished some local ponds with my 8 wgt and its like shooting skeet with a howitzer.

well I made about 400 casts over the week and only caught 1 smallie so I was thankful that those little rock bass would keep me interested… Everytime one would hit they would fight pretty hard for about 3-4 seconds and then give up.
Those bream/sunfish were pretty strong. I thought one of them was a smallie when I first hooked it because I caught it about 30’ from the dock and it dug in pretty hard. My main goal was to catch my first smallmouth OTF… so I can check that off my list now.
