OUCH

Went out today solo on thei nice afternoon. Great bait in three casts. First spot four nice trout. And a spotless red.

Second spot five trout and a ray… This Fu&^%$% got me. Unhooked a thousand rays and bam he turned on me and pop in the palm… Ouch hurts like hell.

Hauled but back and was upset because hadn’t even gotten out the fly rod I planned on using today.

Anyone been stuck Need advise pain is bad. Soaked in water. Bled it good when it stuck me. No barb in hand so Should I go to Doc or not.

Thanks to the guys at the landing for helping me not freak out on my painful ride home…

There ain’t no poison or venem in the barb. It’s just a barb, your lucky he didn’t get your organs. They can see through you just like dolphin to pinpoint vital organs.

true there is no actual poison in the barb but what gets you is the mucus around the barb that gets in the wound and causes infection.

would you please expand on the “they can see through you” comment? this sounds interesting…

Been there done that it HURTS like HELL!!! Seems like ice water made mine feel much better. But get use to the pain, it will be with you for a while.

If you can’t fix it with a hammer, you’ve got an electrical problem.

Just soak your hand in hot water with epsom salt+perocide…This will kill the pain, and any bacteria…believe me when i say that was one of the worse pains in my life!!!when it happened to me the barb went threw my finger and i had 2 wholes in that finger. This made me come home like i was in labor!!

Sorry to hear!

As far as the pain goes, I have heard that you can rub toothpaste and/or white deoderant on the area to calm down the pain. I will say this, those do not work on bee stings. I was cruising on my motorcycle last week with shorts on when my right upper inner thigh felt like it was on fire. I grabbed the area and held something through my shorts until I coasted to a stop. I got off my bike and shook out a yellow jacket. I have been stung many times, but this was the worst yet. It still hurts and the red area is getting bigger. I have tried all kinds of creams and ointments with little to no relief.
I had a friend that got hit by a skate last year, and we had to get home quick. It did not take long for his hand to swell and for him to start feeling bad. I have learned that if you lay the skate or ray on its back and talk to it while you are removing the hook, it will lay still and will not move hardly at all…:wink:
Seriously…

BTW, we told said friend to talk to it and he thought we were crazy, so he kept going with the way he was trying to remove the hook. It may be a ton of coincidences, but I have seen this done everytime except the one, with noone hit…:slightly_smiling_face:

I have learned that if you bash the skate between the eyes with a big stick, it will lay perfectly still and never move.

I’ve heard using absorbine Jr. works pretty good. I always turn a ray upside down and only have the mouth above the rub rail. I’ve never had a tail get close. I’m sure with enough alcohol your hand will stop hurting

'Nuff said!

The best thing to do is to soak it in the hottest water that you can stand. Then go to the doctor to get the barb out.

Three-fourths of the Earth’s surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.

Hot water worked the best. Boiled some water and let it cool down till I could stand it. the relief was instant. However cold water made it hurt and sting like a shooting pain. All better now. Went Sunday and caught a ton o fish but still had a ray thrown in there. Cut it off at the line. No more worries about a five cent hook…
