Out of Commission

Hit a pot hole homing home Saturday night. 10 minutes later the port side wheel came off! Never felt anything vibrating. But regret not stopping to check things out!!!

I know it hurts, but Seels sells new axles. It’s only like 8 bolts to remove and install a new one once it’s jacked up. I’ve replaced a few over the years.

Be sure to own or borrow an acetylene torch before you start.

anything can be fixed except a broken heart.

Sorry to hear that, Sarge. Ifn yever need help, there’s a few of us good guys willing to help

#Truth!!!

Thanks guys! As bad as it was at least I lived to tell about it…and no one else was hurt. I wish I had a video of the trailer tire passing by me on the side of the road. I was dumbfounded…then I saw the tire roll by!!! SMH!

Anyway, turns out SCDOT will cover the damages IF they knew about the pot hole before I hit it. I think it was on Roper Woods Rd just outside Hemingway. Heading down after church tomorrow to find it!

from the video it seems that you lost a few studs. are the rest rusty? i’d go ahead and replace both hubs, the axle looks fine. i’d replace those hubs every couple of years anyway for salt water, and the leaf springs while your under there. i actually snapped the end of my axle last spring so I had to get a tow truck involved. couldn’t fix it on the side of the road. that was a pain because i had to get the boat completely off the trailer to do the job once i sourced the axle, hubs, and new tires. hope your fix was as headache free as possible! happy hunting!

the video shows the axle and hub. the axle looks fine, the hub looks like it’s missing a few studs though. he could just replace the hub. it’s just a castle nut.

In my seasoned years as a salt water fisherman, I’ve learned that you can just replace broken parts and probably be fine for a while, but personally I do far better on the long term if i just attack things like this with a full replacement.

Yes, it’s more expensive. My time these days is more valuable than saving a few hundred bucks and dealing with new maintenance adjacent problems in 6 months or a year. To each his own. It’s not if something breaks on your saltwater trailer, it’s when.

I just paint everything with the used oil from the oil changes on my trucks and tractors
Never had a problem

A tractor oil change… what’s that?
