Out riggins

Was wondering yall’s thoughts on what kind and size I should get. I have a 23.5 Sea hunt with a hard top on the way. I would like to buy local, and would love for them to not break the bank! Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Taco Grand slam kit is probably your best option. You can shop around and maybe save a couple of hundred from this price.

Not local, but hard to beat this set-up if you’re “not looking to break the bank”.
I am currently installing almost the identical set-up on my boat and that’s about what I have invested so far. I bought all the stuff in different places. Would have been nice to have it all arrive in one box.
I had Happy Bob weld in a reinforcement piece under my hard-top to bolt the mounts to. Turned out real nice.

Here is what I wound up with.

Thanks Rd that looks bad ass. Nice set up.

Taco riggers are cheap in price for sure. They also lack in quality & performance.

Ok what is your suggestion cape?

I like the reinforcement. Aren’t most hard tips made so that you don’t have to reinforce them? Just asking because I’m about to install outrigger bases in mine, and there is no metal to weld a reinforcement to.

There nothing wrong with them for the smaller cc market. They work well for their intended purpose.

I’ve had them on my boat for eight years and they work like a charm.

I guess the need for reinforcement has to be determined on an individual basis. For me, my hard-top is simply a fiberglass shell, no core. It is only around 3/8" thick where the mounts would have gone. The stress of the poles extended and transfered to a 4X6 footprint would not have worked well. I thought about lining up 3 of the holes with the existing frame but decided to go the route of adding a good support structure. If your top is cored and thick enough, maybe just add a backing plate of Starboard to increase the footprint of the bases.
As for Taco being cheap, that’s one person’s opinion. Vast majority of small CCs have them and don’t have any problems. That’s what they are designed for. Mine are on a 21 foot Walkaround, I’m using 15’ poles and will not be fishing everyday, I expect years of trouble-free service.

It doesn’t matter how many boats have Tacos or that they were designed for small boats. They are like buggy whips. Outriggers need to be stiff. That’s my point.

You can catch a mahi or tuna on a cane pole, but there are better tools available…

I just got my Sea Hunt 234 Ultra with the Fiberglass top and I got my Taco GrandSlams for under $1000. I didn’t order the kit. I ordered them separately off ebay for $971 with free shipping.

I couldn’t justify spending the $1700 for the same setup with the under the TTOP positioning. I just get my fat a$$ on the gunwale and extend them myself.

I have had this setup on my 2006 Sea Hunt 232 Ultra, both of which came rigged with the mounting plates.

Good Luck!

Ok, since the suggested set-ups are “cheap, lack in quality and performance, and need to be stiff” Then please offer a suggestion that will not break the bank for the orignial poster.

He did ask you directly on 3/29 but all he has got so far is how everyone else with a small CC is running an inferior product.

Got 1800 hrs on my set and finally broke a pin in one of the bases

If I had a suggestion for him, I’d give it. I don’t know of a cheap set of riggers that are any good, sorry.

My opinion of the Tacos are from direct knowledge. Been there & done that.

They suck.

So…just name a couple regardless of price suitable for a smaller boat…??

There are plenty on the market…

My only point is that buggy whips are not what you look for in outriggers. You can use them, but they are not ideal.

I’ve used Taco riggers…I’ve owned Taco riggers. Stiffer riggers are better for more solid hookups.

Just trying to help.

In reality, it all comes back to “what you expect to do with the equipment you buy and how you take care of it”.
As long as you don’t exceed the designed capabilities of whatever outrigger you buy you should be ok. Then again sometimes you just get a lemon or have a bad experience with a piece of equipment.
My first boat (second hand) came with a set of solid pole outriggers that were gunnell mounted. I absolutely hated them because I have to trailer my boat 200 miles just to get to the coast and traveling with those things were a PITA. I wanted teloscopic outriggers but couldn’t justify the expense at the time. I only fished the ledge about once a year out of my boat and then the rest of my trolling was 100’ or less and then it was for kings.
I took a set of pool poles and made my own telescoping outriggers poles. A little machine work on the lathe and some parts picked from West Marine and I was in business. I caught dolphin, wahoo, kings, amberjacks, and barracudas on those poles. Never experienced a failure. I had more in the ends that go into the gunnels than I had in the poles and all the rigging. I took care of them and they worked
I sold that boat last year but still have the poles. If I hadn’t sold the boat there would probably be some fish to die this year at the hands of those pool pole outriggers.
