How does the county figure the value on an outboard motor for tax purposes? Seems they think mine is worth a lot. I’m in Georgetown County.
Prob a phone survey…Tax office has been contacting wives to see what their husbands have been telling them the boat and motor are worth.
NADA, etc. is what they go by.
What’s your model and year?
Look it up on NADA.com under “boats” and “outboard motors.”
The county is normally below avg retail in my experiences.
You can appeal the assessment if you have data supporting a lower value. Instructions are on the tax bill.
I’m a G’Town County resident also, btw.

Sure would be nice if they based the value on what the wives said we told them we paid.

Not in my case, at least in Kershaw County. This year was finally the year that I was determined to get something changed about my tax situation. I have a 7 year old Tundra with 305,000 miles on it.
My wife’s car is brand new and yet I am paying twice the taxes she is.
Last year I drafted a written appeal with an NADA printout, and an explanation of why my truck wasn’t worth what they were claiming it was worth. They largely ignored my appeal and gave me a $50 break for high mileage.
Last Friday I headed to the municipal building on a mission. I walked in and submitted my tax bill with the appeal for high mileage. They gave me my usual high mileage break dropping me from $550 to $500. I was frustrated but maintained my composure and politely asked the lady what value they were using for my truck. She said $20,500 even after the high mileage. I was floored.
I then calmly asked what my options were for appealing the value they are using or if perhaps I could make an appointment with the auditor. She explained the only way they would consider an appeal is if I had a written appraisal from the Toyota dealership. I said OK.
I struck out for the dealership on yet another mission. I walked up to the first salesman I saw. I told him I bought my truck there and that I intended to buy my next one there but just not today. I
I love owning two boats until this time of year and the tax bills come. Thats when my wife reminds me how much the taxs cost me for my toys.

They do the same thing in charleston county for my boat taxes. They always seem to think what Im driving is worth well over $35k.
When I brought them the nada value, pictures, receipt from purchase, ect they still only dropped it a few thousand on the appraisal. Then I had to go through it all over again. I brought the dealer appraisal they asked for, but they didnt believe it.
FYI, you can buy a boat just like mine for around $16-18k with the trailer. When I showed the ads, they changed the value to $20k… I still got ripped off, but I recovered a couple hundred bucks they were trying to scam from me. I hate this time of year.

I thought i was the only one experiencing this. IF the value of the boat depreciates w the insurance company, then why not with the tax office. I will be trying to get mine lowered as well on my truck and boat.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I’m not the only one that was wondering.
the easiest thing to do is to go to kbb.com or nada.com or edmunds.com and get the private party value. take that to the tax office and they should accept it and lower your taxes. have been doing this for over 10 years and helps a lot. just a suggestion.
Something crazy happened to me this year. For some reason Charleston county decised to change my boat from a 2011 to a 2012 they also did the same to my motor. Went to the tax office today with all the documentionation to correctt what happened. Spoke to a nice lady and she said that did happen and my taxes were rated on the 2012 accessment. She made copies of all my paperwork and is sending it to the main office. Now it just wait and see what happens. Im glad this post came up because the odds are I may have never looked at the tax papers and my wife would have just paid it and would have never noticed it.

I called them last year and was told that they use a different book to figure the value of the motor and boat (for the life of me I can not remember what book it was). I had to purchase the chance to get the value of the boat and motor. I was then able to get the formula that the tax office used to get the value and found that they were about $100 off in my favor. I then sent in my challenge to have their amount changed and found that I was past the deadline to fight the amount. I am fixing to do it again because I have a 8 year old truck that the taxes hadn’t changed in four years. I would think the value would have gone down in four years and if it hadn’t I should think about selling and making some money.
That is crap. You prove they have been over billing you and they have a deadline to hide behind? No. That is simply unacceptable.
I know this is not really the right place for personal property tax crap but Im in the same place as pawayne.
My vehicle was new 18 months ago. Cost as per dealer invoice 49,700. Now its a year and a half old with 21K miles on it and Charleston County value it at 45,800.
NADA give 40,300 as clean retail and 37,000 as clean trade in. Auditors office currently say the NADA print out shows nothing… but they can work from the dealers invoice. Lets see how this works out.
Bottom line. Check appraised value on tax bills. This all stinks. If I was a conspiracy theorist…
And thank you pawayne
