Outboard stalls when loading on trailer

My outboard (96 Johnson 130) is cutting off when I try to push it on the trailer. It starts fine, idles fine, and runs fine at WOT and everywhere in between, but when loading on the trailer it cuts off every time I give it throttle to go those extra 2-3 feet up the bunks. Carbs were recently rebuilt. Is there an adjustment I can do?

Sounds like the angle of the boat, which would suggest your float{s} are sticking in the level position; probably trash that happened after you had them rebuilt. I AM NOT a mechanic, so send Chris V a PM>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

EF,

OE???

Who rebuilt the carbs? Are your timing and carb link adjustments correct?

Operator Error it definitely ain’t. I’ve had the boat for many years and put it on the trailer over a 100 times. This just started happening the past couple of times while loading it.

Loosewire,

I rebuilt the carbs myself. I did it correctly as it was the 2nd time I’ve done them in the past 5 years and followed the step by step instructions from the manual. Have not checked the timing or linkage.

EF,

The hole shot is really good. Gets on plane super quick. That 130 pushes my 18’ boat very well. Hits top speeds of around 46 mph at around 5600 rpm.

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll check it out.

If the problem started after you rebuilt the carbs then that it where you need to start and not run around on a wild goose chase. Not saying that you do not know what you were doing, but sometimes there are things that happen, even to the best of us. Maybe there was a defect with one or more of the rebuilt parts?

why did you rebuild the carbs, and how did you clean them

Oh man, I could have written his first post. 1996 Johnson 130. Starts ok, runs great on wot…but can’t run it less than 1100 rpm or it shuts off. Lots of fun at the ramp and trailer.

Chris,

I rebuilt the carbs back in October because the bowl gaskets were expanded (probably from ethanol fuel) and the carbs were leaking when I would prime the bulb. I put new kits in all 4 carbs and cleaned out all the passages with carb cleaner. Since then I’ve installed a racor 10 micron fuel/water separator and put starton in at every fillup.
