Outboard Tilt/Trim

Ok guys. I have nearly rebuilt the little creek boat and finally got all the electrical back in its place. One problem… Tilt won’t work. Worked fine before I started this problem…

Here are my thoughts, but I’m not the most versed outboard mechanic. Low battery, I’ve had it on a charger for a while and everything else is working. Just not sure how much power the tilt motor needs. That leads me to #2. Tilt motor. Is there any way I can test it without completely removing it? Not an easy job…

I can hear the relays clicking when I push the tilt button, just replaced one of them late last season, so I find it hard to believe they (both) would be bad.

I need some help! This weekend looks way to nice to stare at it in the driveway.

Am I missing something obvious???

Thanks in advance!!!

No expert here but since you say it was fine before I would start by re-checking all your electrical connections.I’ve had wires break inside their sheath that were not visible after removing.(especially in salt water environment)

Thought about that too, but like I said, I can hear the relays in the outboard clicking… So, my thinking is that it is sending the signal…

Clicking sound in relays usually mean bad relays.

Relays clicking does not mean they are making contact. You have little wires and big wires going to the relays. The little ones operate ,click, the relay. If the wires the relay is connecting are not connected the trim motor will not work even if the relay is clicking up a storm.

Put a volt meter on the trim motor and see if you are getting 12 volts when you “click” the relay.

Bad motor… After banging on it while my brother held the button, got it raised up. Any idea how hard swaping the tilt motor is? It looks like the whole tilt/trim gizmo has to come out? Anyone done this?

Thanks!

relatively easy to switch out the motor if you can get to the bolts.Remove old motor, install new one.My Yamaha 60 had a bolt in the back of the motor that was challenging to say the least.

Same with this one Bill… One of them is hidden under the transom bracket. Might just take it in…

Before changing the motor , try the battery. I had a similar problem, even though the battery showed 12+ volts the amperage was to low and would not drive the motor.

I had a problem where there was a connection point between the relays and motor and one wire came loose in the connection box. I replaced trim motor anyways because it was a rusted and I had already ordered a new one. You are going to need to take the engine off the transom most likely to get to the other screws/bolts. I did, it sucked as the screws usually sit at water level and are corroded badly, and are at a hard angle to deal with on mine too. I would think you could cut the trim motor wires close and hook straight to the battery to check it. Good luck!

I had one that worked intermittently. Could hear the relays engage but pump would not run. Started looked at all the connections, found one on the main power wire that was getting hot. Replaced the connection and no more issue.

Thanks for all the input guys. I did try to replace it myself, with no avail. Couldn’t get the rod that secures the trim piston to the motor out. Already bought the motor. So, taking it up to Chris V at Charleston Marine tomorrow. See you guys on the water soon.

Side note, I will be posting the boat “rebuild” shortly… With thoughts that my project might be able to help someone else as I have gotten so much help from members of this site.
