Outdoor shooting ranges

I’m trying to find an outdoor shooting range thats not too far from goose creek. Does anyone know if boggy head or twin ponds is still open? I tried to call two numbers I saw listed for boggy head but didn’t get anyone to answer.

Twin Ponds was still open the last time that I was there which was a couple of months back.

I didn’t know if the shutdown had closed it.

Boggy Head is closed since the shutdown, from what I have read.

I’m not exactly sure how either of these COULD be closed - maybe a sign posted not to use them? Neither of there parking lots are exactly blocked off, I don’t recall seeing any way to gate them, and there was never a federal employee there to manage the range when I went!

they got enough man power and dollars to lock ur azz up if you dont follow what the sign says but not enought to allow the citizens to enjoy America and what little the government provides in exchange for lots of tax dollars. That puke green USFS puke green $60000 truck will have all the closer you need if you are shooting there right now

Well if for some reason someone with authority showed up while I was there and not supposed to be, what do you think would happen?

I think it would be kind of a luck of the draw thing. If you were dealing w a reasonable person probably nothing. But then there is always the chance the A-hole of the squad would show up and arrest/cite you for a major offense. It is a tough call and I was thinking about the same situation the other day. My decision would have to be not take a chance. Kind of sucks that they shut down the low cost things that only bother normal Americans. If it is closed and they are paying someone to patrol it, why is it closed? Why not pay that employee to patrol an open range instead.

exactly my point. especially like the dam boat ramps. its a piece of conctete with a parkin lot. Not the nuke sub why cant I use it again? But you can pay the guy whos gonna lock me up if I do

3 metal signs blocking road to twin ponds- if you move or went past the blockade they would arrest you for sure- pretty dumb cause i just went down an empty road and set up targets in the woods- fired my guns, picked up the shells and left - I tend to break the rules but wouldn’t recommend shooting the range unless u want a stupid charge and jail to deal with - it sucks

Don’t misunderstand my last post. I was not suggesting you use the range if it’s “Closed” I was just making the observation that it was not like buck hall where there is a gate to be open/closed… If there are signs posted I would certainly stay away - not worth the trouble.

I am also baffled that i’m starting to see the signs posted saying closed due to govt shutdown… Taxpayers had to pay for signs, preventing us from using facilities that require no manpower to operate, because the govt. couldn’t agree on the color and/or odor of dog poop!

Boggy Head does have metal gates…I dont know if its closed for shooting or not but it is gated.

I would assume it is closed. They are writing tickets at all national parks and forest for trespassing and anything else they can dream up. The kicker is you go to federal court instead of magistrates court and if you choose to plead innocent and are found guilty they usually have mandatory jail time associated with each charge. The one time I went for not paying the fee to drive (not park or use boat landing)into Buck Hall the minimum sentence was 30 days in jail. I chose to pay the fine before things went any further.

Boggy head is closed. Is there anywhere else open? Wanted to get my gun sights checked before my hunt next weekend.

you received a ticket for simply driving into Buckhall?

Two friends and I went out to shoot this afternoon. Didn’t try either range. Just found a dirt road and drove down a ways until we found a little clearing. One person drove by while we were out there but didn’t say anything.

I was told by a co-worker that he went to Twin Ponds and it was blocked off with a Fed guy present to keep people from entering.

So…a gun range that’s always unmanned, now has a paid employee sitting there chasing people off because the Govt. is shut down.

Makes sense to me.

Yeah I was past the user fee station and did not have the hanging pass. Bad luck
