Headed up to hatteras for a week. Going to try to catch some sushi since they don’t exist here anymore.
Weather is always a gamble, so for some backup plans, how’s the bottom fishing there? I don’t really recall seeing many reports of grouper or Berliners or bsb. What’s available and where?
We were in Manteo last week, on Roanoke Island just before the bridge to Nags Head. Took a charter out of Oregon Inlet last Thursday, caught 7 40-50 pound tuna and one mahi. They are catching them up good there. The charter went out at 125 degrees about 25 miles, not sure where that puts it relative to Hatteras. There were lots of boats there. The next couple of days they still caught tuna plus limits on bailer mahi.
We took our boat near shore outside of Oregon inlet as well, there are a few reefs near by north and south of there 6-8 miles, 60-70 feet deep. Flounder, sea bass, trigger and the largest toad fish we have ever seen were caught. Spanish mackerel were hot as well. Check the NC DNR site for latest regulations, they change quite frequently. Sea Bass were just opened up last week for that area, it is different for the Hatteras area.
It was a great week for us, only one rainy day and flat ocean the three times we went out the inlet. Water temp ranged from 85 sound side to 67 near the beach one day.
