Outfitting a Fishing Kayak

I have almost ordered my kayak (Ride 135) - paid, but waiting on rep to return call regarding color availability. Now I am looking for things to outfit it for fishing. Dave is going to install one Scotty rod holder on the front.

Where might I aquire a milk crate? Not a fake one from office depot - they are not heavy enough.

Also - I found Scotty rod holders at Campmore http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=39205350&memberId=12500226 for $18, if you need to order some.

Walmart in Goose Creek has the insert style rod holders for <$3 each. I am guessing they will be the same at other WMs as well. They had the ones to mount on the milk crate for the same price.

Harbor freight has 4 15 foot ratchet straps for $8.99. Also, they are only $1 each at the National Guard Amory this weekend. I’ll probably get mine there.

I have a 5 gallon bucket. I have had it for years. If you don’t know anyone in construction, you can ask at the grocery bakery/deli counter. They get frosting, lard, and other stuff in them. If you are too proud to ask for one, Home Depot sells them for about $5. Asking is free and earth friendly. It keeps them out of the landfill.

Anything else I am missing?

where is the armory?

Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and I thought to myself, where the heck is the ceiling?

You can get a milk crate behind any gas station in the lowcountry. Don’t drill massive holes in your kayak. Get a piece of pvc, cut a couple of small sections, then use cable ties to secure to your milk crate. Theres your rod holders. 5lb grappel style anchor at west marine. Get a small net from sports authority. Soft cooler for beverages. Stringer if your keeping fish. Dry bag or box for camera, keys, phone etc. Crazy Creek chair for extra back support. There ya go.

PalmettoBum - thanks for the advice.
I will probably attach the rod holders to the crate, once I acquire one.
I will not be taking a crate from behind the gas station though. Call me strange, but I am just not comfortable with taking things that do not belong to me. Just as I do, there will be a massive milk crate crackdown and I would wind up in jail and on the front page of the paper.

but taking old milk crates is free and earth friendly!

I don’t think that the judge will buy that.

What’s crazy is that real crates only cost about $4 (article http://www.rfidgazette.org/2006/07/got_milk_crates.html) and the imitations are almost $7 (at Staples.com).

Just use a dremmel tool and grind off the dairy name and of course it can;t be traced so you’re good  I am looking for a milk crate myself. My yak came with one swivel rod holder up front and two that lay down behind the seat, I have a 15lb mushroom anchor that works but sometimes, depending on the mud depth, it gets a little akward pulling it out and not tipping the yak. Dolphin D is on the money when he says get a cajun anchor. I am going to make one out of galvanized pipe and see how it works, it’s like $4 for the 5 foot section of pipe and it’s pretty heavy, I just don’t ahve the $50 for a stainless steel one. So far I have had a BLAST in my yak. I had an old Pelican case that I use for my phone, wallet and stuff to keep dry, you can also use one of those wide mouth water bottles, the unbreakable ones, they seal up water tight and don’t take up much room. I also took one and put in a map, matches, 1st aid kit etc. It’s small and doesn’t take up much room. I’d rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it… Tight lines Bro!

I don’t lie about the fish I catch… I just remember them bigger…

If you don’t feel comfortable taking a milk carton from behind a gas station then just go behind a grocery store like I did

Check out the Crate Mate Jr, you should be able to see a picture on kayakfishingstuff.com. We will have that product in our store as soon as they can clear customs. It is a cover for a crate with rodholders, rod leashes, and lots of storage pockets. Makes things simple!!

By the way, your RED Ride is on order and in stock at the factory. They are waiting on a truck going this way which should be soon!! I will let you know as soon as I find out when it will be here.

How about a 5’ length of 3/4" PVC (regular, not sch 40) pipe filled with sand or cement and capped on both ends? A stainless hook eye for the rope and you’d be set. Would it be heavy enough? It wouldn’t rust like galvanized. I realize that the galvanized isn’t supposed to rust, but it would get chiped up and eventually rust and get rust stains on the yak.

The PVC would probably work just as well but that sounds like a lot of work  I am going to try the galvanized and see how it does, if it looks like it’s rusting right away I’ll try the PVC route. Either way it’ll be a lot cheaper than the $50 for the REAL Cajun anchor. I promise Doplhin D, as soon as I win the lottery my first stop after the bank is Time out for my Tarpon 140 and a real cajun anchor

BTW - for a light drift anchor I have heard that a 20 oz soda/water bottle filled with sand and tied to a rope works well.

Use a rucksack. Put a majority of your stuff (if not all) and the frame works well as a back support…
