Outgoing/Incoming Elliott Cut

Fished a sea wall today on Elliott Cut. Surprisingly, just at slack outgoing I hooked one of my biggest inshore reds ever. Had about a 1" chunk of cut frozen mullet about 4 feet from the wall. Water at slack is only about 2’ deep there. Worked him up to the surface and got a look. Can only guess, but somewhere in the 35"+ range with a head like a bowling ball. After playing possum for a few minutes he straightened the hook as he waved goodbye, so no shining golden picture. Started to get a few bites after that as the tide changed to incoming, but then Flipper showed up.

Everytime I ride through that place Jim, I feel like people want to play bumper boats

True that. Saw some of the best and some of the worst boaters over the three hours I sat yesterday. One dude in a 70s speedboat passed three boats wide at around 45 knots within 10 feet of the docks. Lots of folks up on plane flying close to the docks. I’ll shoot the Cut on plane if it’s empty, because my wake is minimal and I can stay 50 feet from the docks. But if there are multiple boats, it’s idle time. Seeing that I was fishing, I watched in amusement and concentrated on total relaxation.

I’m with you Jim, I’m amazed how many people don’t realize that’s a narrow channel and you need to slow down if busy. Then it becomes a bigger mess mixing impatient-gotta-go-fast with cautious-slow-down. My 18’ gets tossed around pretty good in there at times!

I used to run a 12’ “shallow-v” fiberglass boat in there with a 1956 4hp motor. Got wet a lot. Still often brave it in my yak, but almost never on weekends. I hug the bank the entire way. Can’t imagine being there Saturday when those two old redneck turds in that speedboat flew past within 10 feet of the bank.

At 'O" dark 30 bump a big white bucktail along that stretch and see what happens.
