Any drawbacks to using outriggers for kings while using live bait.
I have two downriggers on my boat and also outriggers and thought it may help me run an extra line or two while chasing kings but never seen anyone use them
Seems like I have heard the drop back from the outriggers does not work well with kings
No drawbacks. Fished this weekend. Caught 8 kings - all on outriggers or center rigger. Had to feed one or two, but really didn’t miss any fish due to drop back
I actually troll ballyhoo on the long riggers while using live bait on all the other shots. The long rigger baits have caught big fish for me in the past.
There are a number of reasons you don’t see any of the pro boats using outriggers.
Noticed that before but never knew why, I did have a guy that fishes SKA tell me the way they run their boats the outriggers got bent and that was why he did not use them. Was not sure if that was true or not
Yep, definitely plenty of opportunity for riggers to break while running, but also consider that chasing a fish down in any kind of seas could present additional stresses. More importantly, for guys fishing for big fish with live bait and ultra light drags, the dropback tends to pull small trebles out of the fishes mouth. Same reason people don’t live bait with braid. Pulls hooks. Also outriggers will tear up your live bait. Just look at how soft the tips of real king mac rods are.
One of the biggest reasons…think about it with outriggers extended and wave movement creates more pull when the boat rocks…live bait dont last long being snatched up and down…more terminal tackle and more chances of probs…get a nice fish on the hook and its more stuff to get put up to chase down a fish…downriggers --outriggers 5 rods…and youre fish is already gone by by…I like um pulling dead bait but not live…
