My mom has an old canoe she got as a gift. Had taken her on a float trip or two in mine before. Mine is a Old Town Guide and her’s a bit more narrow and tippy. She got a set of out-riggers and I put them on and gave it a try. They are the trick! You can stand and walk around with them on there.
With them up a few inches you can still paddle easy but are tip proof. With them down it doesn’t move at all. They make them for a yak also.
Would be great for fishing. I think she got them from Cabelas. Flyer in box says “Spring Creek Outfitters” canoegear.com. Have more gadgets for a canoe or yak then I ever saw.
For yak fishers check out the new Shallow Water Angler. Big article in there on accessorizing your yak for fishing. Has a set of floats on the boat in the article from canoegear.
Hey JF, yeah I saw those in the latest issue. Sure would consider adding those a set, but they aren’t cheap. Still shopping. I would lose too much gear if I took a spill while trying to stand up. But, it sure feels good to stand up once in a while, not to mention the added view. Hope to hit the Copahee Thursday a.m. if I keep on track with my to do list. v/r TF
I just saw a new outrigger product from hobie. I am going to get a set and see if they can work on other kayaks as well. Go to http://www.hobiecat.com/media/pdf/eKayakCatalog2006.pdf and check out the Sidekick ama kit on page 11 of the catalog.
