outriggers

I am looking in installing outriggers on my 21 foot cobia, and was wondering which ones you guys recommend on purchasing and who to install them.

Depends a whole lot on your price range… they can range from a few hundred bucks to a few grand…

-Albemarle 248xf “Chella”
-Dolphin 18BC Pro
-Miscellaneous boats
“Everybody dances when shotgun sings” Stewart and Winfield

my price range is about 800-1200. i have used rupp outriggers before on my older and much bigger boat but am just wondering what would be the best fit for me now.

Check out MarshTacky, made by Phin on here. Very nice!!

If the past two seasons are any indication, in a 21 foot boat they aren’t going to get much use when the dolphin are plentiful.

I’ve got Marsh Tacky 17’ retractables on my 21’er…best out there and local, too

Sorry...like a well tied mullet: Between the A and T.

Are the bases, poles and rigging included in your budget?

This is about the closest you are going to get to your budget with decent quality.

I’ve always done all my stuff myself. Do you have the plates in the top or will you have to get some put in?

yea I have plates under the canvas on the T top, is it pretty simple to do myself, or do you recommend having someone do it

It’s really pretty simple. If you are the least bit handy, you should be able to do that yourself.

I’m of the opinion that smaller boats need outriggers more so than bigger (wider) boats in order to spread out the spread in addition to keeping the rods in the cockpit (sucked pulling out of T-top with fish on) and provide drop back after knockdown.

Our outriggers get the most action most days.

Keep an eye out on eBay and Craigslist.

Took a while to find the deals but we outfitted our boat …

Taco Grand Slam 250s (one was cracked) - $138.00 shipped (eBay)
Welding to fix the crack - $60.00 (N. Charleston)
Used Taco 1.5 inch 15 ft. outriggers - $277.00 (Craigslist)
Plastic wedges to compensate for T-top curve - $85.00 (new - biggest rip off on the planet but necessary)
Rupp Rigging Kit (Nylon)- $102.00
Nuts and Bolts and screws and things - $20.00

Total - $682.00

Installation - $0

Good Luck.

The Marsh Tackys are awesome but were out of my budget. I bought Taco Grand Slam 170 kit on EBAY for $581.00 !! Made bottom plates out of 1/4 inch stainless and mounted myself. That same kit was priced as high as $1200.00 on EBAY but I kept checking and got them for $581.00 !!! Still haven’t gotten to try them out yet but cant wait !

The 170 kit like CPD mentions is a pretty good option. Nothing is below the T-top, all the controls are mounted above the top. I have had a set on my boat for 3 years now along with the 15’ collapsible aluminum poles and haven’t had any issues at all. (I’m saving up for a set of Marsh Tacky’s but not quite there yet)
Look on some of the classifieds and you should be able to come up with a set of poles at a decent price.
