Hi all! I posted a couple months ago and got a lot of helpful info from this site and I really appreciate it. I’ll be coming to Mt.Pleasant on Wed for vacation and I’m bringing my 8wt with me. I’m not too sure how successful I’m going to be with it but I’m sure going to try.
My Dad has a boat but I don’t think its small enough for the flats but I could be wrong. I know he takes it up the Wando River a lot though. I’m thinking of three scenarios I want to try with the flyrod but my main question for ya’ll is what are my options for tailing reds if my only access to them is my own two feet? Not asking for any hotspotting just wondering about the possibilities. Secondly, I’m also wondering what my options are if I were to fish from the boat in the Wando River. And thirdly, what are my options in the surf.
In past years I’ve been successful with other methods using bait but I really want to catch some saltwater species on the fly!
Thanks again to all those that have helped so far!
I hear of some flats you can walk and can get to by foot but I am not 100% on where they are… As for the Wando… tons of fish, just about everywhere… saw some MONSTER tails the other day just off the river… make sure you have some crab patterns with ya
you should plan to cruise around in the big boat starting about two hours before high tide and look for flats covering up with water, then anchor the boat and hop on a flat and wade. You don’t need a flats boat, just a ride out there.
You said you are from out of town so, be careful when you “wade the flats” around here. We have more mud than hard packed sand. You could easily get half way across a flat area and sink to your waist. Have fun but, just be careful! Ty
Thanks for all the input fellas! I really appreciate it and I can’t wait to get out there and chase some tail! I’ll for sure post a report if I get lucky.
One other quick question though… anyone know of any 4th of July deals on tackle; specifically fly reels? I have a reel but I’d like to get something a little better if I can find a deal.
If your walking, stay on the short grass, wear an old set of sneakers. Tall grass/soft ground = sinking and crawling out. Not fun, I learned my lesson the hard way when I first moved to SC. Took me 45 minutes to crawl out while every bug in Copahee sound had me for dinner.LOL now. Tall grass, anything that is about waist high. Enjoy
Were wool socks with your sneakers also. Keeps your legs from getting all scratched up and stuff from inside your shoes scratching… I bought some long socks at walmart. Better than the $30 ones that orvis sells.
chris.
I like to use long pants… I have old uniform pants that dry quick (Army 2 peice flight suits) lots of pockets, dry quick and protect you form the sun and bugs… The guide pants made by columbia are great too… you can find the same kinds of pants cheaper by other brands though…
