Over Heat alarm

The over heat alarm on my 90 Yami 2 stroke went off yesterday morning after a bout 30 mins of running and stopping. The part of the lower unit was super hot!! The engine was full of oil and was “Peeing” strong. Took the cowling off let it sit for a mins and idoled back with no problems. I plan on replacing the impeller as this is the most likely culprit is there any thing else is could be that I have over looked???

Thermostat?

If it was peeing strong, I don’t think it would be impeller or thermostats, they both would be doing their job for it to pee strong.
If the lower part of motor was extremely hot, I think you may have gear problems in lower end, I have seen them make a motor so hot steam was coming from it and the top end be fine. Just a possibility.

Something clogging up the exhaust? Water passage to exhaust manifold? If there is gunk in the water passages, the pee hole could still be getting water, while the water that’s dumped into the exhaust is restricted. That’d theoretically cause 1) the motor to run hot and 2) the un-cooled exhaust to heat up the lower unit… maybe…

EDIT: Maybe run it on the ears and see if any water is coming thru the prop, see if that water is getting super hot. Drain the foot oil and check for metal flakes, indicating gear damage. Also, I guess your 3-cyl only has one t-stat, but it’s worth a look while you’re at it, replacing it is easy & cheap insurance for problems down the road…

Replaced Lower unit oil a week or so ago and the oil looked fine no water flakes or discoloration. I flushed the engine on the hose hook up and water was coming out of everywhere it should. Ill run it again and see if it heats up again thanks for the feed back.

Your motor will pee strong even with a completely frozen thermostat. It only takes a couple minutes to take it out and check it. If I were a bettin man I’d say that’s your problem.

what part of the lowerunit was super hot?

fishmarshal is correct

I’m now at www.teamcharlestonmarine.com

Buddy is having similar issues with a 2000 90 yam he just bought. New impeller, t-stat. Buzzer goes off when running hard. Mounted in the lowest position on a 16 scout even trimmed down.

He just bought it from a local shop and has been back 2 times and for same issue in 4 days. I would have demanded a refund by now, but he is hoping they figure it out.

The top of the lower unit that was out of the water, was very very hot.

Going to check thermostat hoping that was the problem
