Overheat Alarm

Happy 4th everyone!

1998 Yamaha 130 alarm sounded and motor died. I cant read my gauges but I believe it was the overheat alarm. Pulled the cover and heads were hot. Got towed in but motor started back up after cooling down so I could dock it in my slip with no alarm.

New water pump just installed, de-carb, new plugs, and cleaned the carbs. I just bought this boat and it had 25 gallons of gas from last year mixed with 30 new this week non-E gas. New water separator.
I cleaned the carbs myself and set the idle screws 1.25 turns out. That’s where they were set before. Sounded good.

So thermostats, or blockage in the head, or could I be running lean?

Was it peeing?

Peeing very strong.

You would think, that there would be no blockage in the head if it’s peeing! Sounds like a question for Chris V !

Did you check the oil pump on the reserve tank to make sure it is working? The oil reserve on the motor will be low if its not.

Maybe thermostats

You can’t catch fish on a dry line

Oil tank was working. The oil reserve was full. I would not think both Thermostats would go at the same time. Both sides were hot.

What do you use to acid wash the heads and how do you do it?

Might be of some help?

the 2 stroke 115-130 do have some issues with a gel building up inside the water jackets, blocking water flow, and flushing wont help, you have to pull the heads and clean it all.

Chris, that is what I thought by doing some web surfing. What is your price to do so and is there anything you would recommend replacing while inside? How easy is this to do if I tried it myself? The part I’m nervous about is striping a bolt.

bolts breaking is the worst part
about 4 hours labor would be best “guess” without checking, but it could be something else

Many people post there problem and ask for advice and once solved they never post what the problem was. Here’s what I found:

Pulled the t-stats and one was stuck closed and the other stuck half open. No build up on the inside so hopefully the heads don’t have to come off. I believe the original owner never changed them. Going to run the boat to see if that solved the problem.

Update: Boat is running great with no overheat alarms going off. It was in fact the t-stats.
