Overheating/obstruction

So my f225 is overheating. I have replaced the impeller, and thermastat. It is not peeing as strong as the port motor. There is obviously an obstruction somewhere. I have flushed the lower unit with a water hose. I obviously have some sand or mud somewhere. I am taking it to another shop after the first one failed to fix it. Where might this obstruction be? What is the worst case scenerio? as I am not sure the entire path the water takes from the intake to the pee hole.

Is the overheat alarm going off? I had a Mud Dobber get in mine and build a mud nest, which stopped up the peehole. I cleared the whole out with a piece of wire. Started peeing again! Mike Murphy at Hanckel Marine says that an F225 has a bypass so the peehole can be stopped up and it is still cooling!

Yes…overheat alarm going off. We are way past it just being dirt or something clogged up right in the line there.

does it only do it at low rpms?

Honestly Chris that’s hard for me to answer. It happened the first time when my brother was using it, and it was definitely doing it at high and low rpms. As mentioned, It was taken to a local shop where I thought it was fixed. However, Saturday when I ran it, the alarm did go off when I throttled down. After that, I came back to the dock on one motor, where I ran water though the hose through it, and turned it back on in neutral, where it overheated again. I hope that helps.

Didn’t a bunch of those 225’s have corrosion problems causing overheating? I know Stonoman ended up buying a new F225 because of internal rot.

After googling Yamaha f225 corrosion problems…dear Lord. I may be going down a costly road. Hard to believe that I have never seen this on this website. I pray it’s not the worst case scenario I have been reading about. All early 2002/2003 Yamaha f225 owners need to get ahead of this before it’s catastrophic.

Sorry to poop in your cheerios. Depending on what you have, it might be good preventative maintenance to get both of them done. The parts pricing seems fair, try and negotiate a good labor price.

I am not 100% familiar with the 225’s so I cannot give advice either way. Personally, I don’t like what Yamaha did to Stonoman and if a little effort is taken to research this one issue, others might look at Yamaha with a different view.

Then again, what do I know? I have a Ficht. :stuck_out_tongue:

Man it seems if you own enough boats you will get screwed sooner or later on some engine issue like this…ie Optimax’, HPDI’s, etc. Big question for Chris or anyone in the know, is if it’s a weak pee stream, there could be deterioration in the exhaust manifold causing water to leak into the oil pan. What’s the likelihood of it compromising the block…??

it doesnt normally leak into the oil pan
the water just leaks back into the exhaust before it reaches the block for cooling
kind of like a big hole in your waterhose
when the pressure is low, most of the water will leak out the hole before it gets to your sprinkler, but when you turn up the volume, water still leaks out the hole, but it also comes out the sprinkler.
you can see the issue just by dropping the gearcase

Thanks Chris. Getting it checked out tomorrow.

Update…I am in Murrells Inlet, so pulling it to Charleston was impractical. It was the corrosion in both motors, but judging by some of the repair bills I saw on THT, I will come out cheap. Yamaha sells the new kits for 600, and the anticitated labor is 800 bux. All of this times 2. It sucks, but after all of the nightmare scenerios I had running around in my brain about replacing motors and such, I am kinda thankfull.

That does soften it a bit. Sorry to hear you were a victim of yamahas poor engineering, luckily it is an uncommon thing for them to screw something up that bad. That settles any worry that I have for my motor down the road.

Any information to the source of it yet? When I was reading, the cause was still being debated.

Redstripe, I have an 2002 F225 also. Haven’t had a problem yet but who knows! Do you have a Part # for that kit?

Easy,

Get your boat checked out ASAP. The real damage is done when you run it for awhile with the a hole in that tube. The problem was that Yamaha did not cover the inside of that tube properly and it corroded terribly. Google Yamaha f225 corrosion, and there is more than you can read. Most is from THT. The people with the early problem, who’s warranties had just expired really got screwed. Now Yamaha has owned up to it, and selling the parts for a deep discount (600 bux ) The ironic part about much of this is that I bought this boat used and the previous owner had purchased an extended warranty that ran out not to long ago. Oh well. This happens when you own boats long enough. I’m like Stonoman, and not going to freak. I wanna fish.

Redstripe, its good you got to it before any permanent damage occurred. It does seem like a lot of the Japanese engines I have owned suffer from corrosion issues. The Honda I had on my McKEE was rotting from the inside. I avidly ear muff and back flushed it every time and even rigged up a way to run salt away through it.

I know this will not be well liked but my Rude and 2 Mercs before it did not have near the corrosion problems. Just my personal experience.

Easy, you should have someone knowledgeable in the F225 corrosion issue check it out. 1400$ is a lot better than 5000+$ for a powerhead. If you get a hole through it like Stono, that will be your only option.

Thanks guys! I am going to have the lower unit gone over in the near future so will do that! I still don’t understand exactly where is the tube, or what it’s called? Can you give me a part number for it? I do think, from what I’ve been reading, that you can inspect it from the lower unit. Do you have to pull the power head to replace it?
