Headed out yesterday on the first trip of the year. Plan was to chunk for the tunas last night and catch the early bite today.Decided to run south and put lines in once we got to the ledge. Trolled around wtih not much luck, two slingers which were both released. Deciding to give this chunking thing a try and we were pretty unsuccesful. Ended the night with 2 cows about 25 pounds, a shark, and 3 cut offs.
Trolled around this morning with nothing until we decided to see what the evergreen had to offer. As soon as we got to the spot we had an immediate shot at a very large blue. She flirted with the bart on the center rigger and then switched over to the long rigger, just could not get a hook in her. Worked the area and 5 minutes later she piled on the other long rigger.
She put on a show jumping close to ten times then decided to take off. Took 99.9 percent of the spool in the firs 45 seconds. Couldnt back down fast enough and had to pull a 180 and chase her at 14 knots… still ripping line off the reel and that was all she wrote. After about 15 minutes Marlin 1, me 0. Not going to put a weight to her, just wished we could have sealed the deal and got some pictures and measurements. Finished the day with a pair of grown mahis. cow was 28 and bull was 30.
That is a great fish story there. I’m still looking for my first; can’t wait.
Glad you guys got some action.

Schuyler, I thought you were going to be studying all night for your final instead of posting about a doggone fishing trip ! We’ll all be expecting to hear that you ‘aced’ it.
A fun trip for sure.

PS. the fillets looked real good, lot’s of meat.
good to see that a few bluefish were hooked/caught. i’m guessing you have a boat w/ outboards?? if so, i would not even try and back on a blue of any size. just spin around and chase it as soon as possible. clear your lines on one side and get after her. just a thought. btw, i’ve chased them in gear in diesel boats as well.
what size reel did she spool?

sounds sweet who did you go with?
they were fishing on hattaboy. i think it’s a 38 hatt. i heard a 50w
folly basser
fished on the hattaboy which is a 38 hattaras. She dumped a 50w like it was nothing,Promising start to the season… hopefully expectations wont be to high for the rest of it. Its good to hear that several blues were encountered over the weekend. I think I have of heard of 4. I dont think that happened until atleast the second or 3rd weekend in May last year maybe we will have a great bite this year.
Interesting. Pretty rare to get dumped on a 50W that quick. Did you consider hooking up another outfit? I’ve had one ready a few times, but never needed to do it. I’ve never heard of it actually working, but I did have a friend lose 3 outfits on his bote. I have only heard of using a poly ball and it working out on multiple hookups w/ bluefins. I think that more than one in the water and all you are doing is throwing gear away due to the weight / water drag, but I will definitely do it if given the chance.
