Overnighter 4/29-4/30

Left Remley’s @ 4:30 PM on Friday with 40inchreds, Capps and his Bro in Law Mike. Seas were snotty. First stop was in 95’ and caught some monster BSB up to 20". Fished there til 10pm. Decided to go ahead and anchor at a spot on the ledge so we didn’t have to go anywhere at daybreak to set our spread. We got there around midnight as we chugged the 19.5 miles very slowly. To our surprise, this spot was LOADED with all monster Beeliners. In 95’ we couldn’t catch a keeper but here, all of them were 16" and bigger. We ended up filling the box with 16-20" footballs. The dolphins (flipper) put on a show behind the underwater lights all night chasing squid and flying fish. They often torpedo’d into the boat and into us. We also had jaws lurking down low as we came up with shreds of fish. Once we caught a large AJ with at least a 12" head and the bite took his body clean and left a perfect half circle shape on the remains. Had to be a pretty big boy. I, for some unknown reason, became very sick around 4am and was out of commission with the chills and feeling very loopy til i slept it off around 8:15am. I missed the triple knock down and the first Phin to hit the deck on the troll. We had 4/5 knockdowns during the night on a free line but only got one to the gaff. Every Mahi was very close in size. Weights were 9,12,13,13.5,13.5 and unknown (she didn’t make it to the scale I have at home). Each fish measured in almost the same between 36-38". I wanna say a special thanks to those who posted in the discussion forum I had. We used a lot of you guys advice and it paid off big time. Trip did not go on without a hitch however. We had anchor light break on the way out, jerry rigged that and kept rear spreader on when on anchor. Got the plow anchor hung good and in the attempt to drive it off i made a mistake, swung to wide and bent the crap out of the shaft (it still worked when we moved to our next spot). Finally decided to leave the VHF antenna up for the tow home and came home to one snapped at the ba

Glad you guys had a nice trip, and are back to the Hill, safe!

The entertainment of watching all the life in the lights can only be understated. The blue glow around the boat produce an aquarium or national geographic/animal planet quality of visuals. It was calm and I first heard a sound in the dark like a wave cresting and crashing but there where no waves around, and then a few dolphin swam around the boat and I then knew what the sound was. As we set the anchor I laid on the bow to watch/manage the line and the dolphins swam right under the bow by the anchor rope just a few feet from arms reach several times and I even got sprayed a little when they blew there blow holes. There was a chain patterned eel swimming and chasing flying fish but he was unsuccessful so he hung out around the transom. The dolphins were great entertainment, they would rocket through and nail a few flying fish and stun the others to come back and grab. Then they would go away and small fish would school back up under the boat and they would come back and feed. It was a really nice but dark night with the moon not making an appearance till late in the night at about 3 in the morning. I saw 3 shooting stars and about every other star in the universe. At one of the spots we bottom fished the oh so rare Red Snapper was a nuisance with plenty of them being caught with most around the 5lb range with some bigger and some smaller. In the 90dt spot there where some sharp nose sharks that where a bit of a bother but there wasn’t any sharks really in 150ft except for a monster that mauled one of the biggest vermilion snapper I’ve ever seen and the largest amber jack that I jigged up on a glow jig which was all it would produce. As always thanks for letting me go it was a good time with good people.

Another great trip Cory. Many more to come in 2016

He was warned. I man c’mon this is the guy who went offshore in rough seas 13 days after major shoulder surgery. He throws caution to the wind at all times. He also thought overnight fishing was the best thing ever as I’m chewing my nails off moving spot to spot after dark.

First off, congrats on a successful trip. Glad you guys caught fish and had good weather for this.

No disrespect meant in this question at all, but what do you feel you accomplished at night that you couldn’t during a day trip?

No way they would have ever seen those stars during the day.

Quality share right there. We’ll done. Overnight in a center console must give you perspective. Wish I had the intestinal fortitude to attempt something like that.

Simply able to go out on a Friday after accomplishing some work and getting home much earlier on a Saturday. If I would’ve went straight to the ledge and been able to get on the fish before the fish that don’t bite after dark stopped we may have had even better luck. I really enjoyed being @ the trolling spot at wake up versus driving there thru the dark. I honestly would say 23SF that being @ the spot and not having to drive from 4:30 AM out there in the pitch dark is the bonus. However we drove 19.5 miles to the ledge in the dark this trip but wouldn’t do it again next trip.

What happened to jim Terra ?

I’ve never been offshore at night (not counting early mornings), but I LOVE being on the water on a nice summer night. It is my favorite time to fish.
