Since oyster season is about to start, I would like to put out a request for everyone to recycle your oyster shells. For those of you that recycle, THANK YOU!. The SCDNR recycled a record number last year (28,000+ bushels) and we hope to surpass that number this year. There are approximately 100,000 harvested each year and another 100,000 imported statewide, so there are plenty of shells that can still be captured. The shells that are recycled will be used to create new oyster beds that are open to harvest. These oyster beds also provide valuable ecological services.
Recycling drop off locations can be found here www.saltwaterfishing.sc.gov/oyster.html
If you are having a large roast (>20 bushels), please email score@dnr.sc.gov and we may be able to arrange to have your shells picked up after the roast.
