Oyster

I was wondering where exactly I can collect some oysters from land? I do not have a boat so it will have to be easily accessible. And what exactly are the rules/laws on oysters? Do I have to have a special license? Certain time of year? And how many can I collect at a time? Thanks for any help I can get!

make sure you check out the Recreational Shellfish Maps section on the upper right of that link…you will be hard pressed to find legal, open oyster collecting spots without a boat…and by the time you have done that you could have probably ponied up for $28 or so bucks to buy a fresh bushel from a local seafood store…some places also sell half bushels…

Thanks. Ya I worried about not being able to get to any good spots without a boat but that’s why I posted to see if someone out there can help me out! I like the process of collecting them I’m not big on eating them so driving around to find somewhere isn’t a big issue as long as I can get to them for sure.

also, it’s a good idea to call DHEC’s hotline (800-285-1618) and press 2 for charleston county before you go out- they test the water regularly, and sometimes close certain shellfish areas if there is heavy rain or some kind of spill. call it today to find out what a sewage spill closure sounds like!

HINT: find the southwest side of S201

nothing like 500,000 gallons of effluent in the ICW to nasty up your shellfish!
