I stand corrected,today.Hammer played offence during the Red Parker era,nobody on the team could hold a football then!!!
Was not on this boat but have often caught grouper while trolling. Use same bait as for dolphin-wahoo-tuna (ballyhoo with skirt or witch. When trolling over live bottom, pull out the bent butt rod with 10% reel loaded with 80 lb monel, attach LARGE planer, 25’ Jinkai 300 lb leader, 6’ wire and then the bait. Works best in <120’ of water. Let out enough line until the planer starts bumping bottom and then reel in enough to get planer just clear of bottom structures. With tight enough drag to keep the planer from pulling out line - the grouper have a difficult time to maneuver into structure after hook up.
Have brought in cobia as well as grouper with this set up.
Downsides: Have to maneuver the fish hooked up top around the wire line. Have to hand line in the fish those last 30’ after the planer reaches the rod tip.
