Had the rare weekend pass from the Admiral (I think she felt bad as my now wednesday afternoons have all been rained out or way to windy to fish) - grabbed my 11 year old son, capt jay, jimmy, troy and patrick and headed out to the blue water. We started towards the GT hole, leaving the dock at 0530. The weather forecast was not too accurate. Washing machine. Better ride to the Scarp, so a little course correction and we had lines in around 7:30. 68 degree water, south end of the scarp. Two black fin, slow going. Scattered weeds as we made our way up through our numbers. Short strike. The weeds were close, thick and scattered. Kept us busy. Not worth the effort for no fish.
We ran out in search of warmer water. Six or so miles east, 600 feet, we found 74 degree water. My boy landed his first Mahi. Solo swimmer. Circled back and had another on. Spit the hook after an aerial show close to the boat.
Time was a factor, we had a party to attend at 5pm - Jimmy had a trip to prepare for. So we decide at 12:30 to head home. As we were pulling lines in, the ‘Magic Carpet’ appeared in 560 feet. Three short strikes, then cast and catch. Two on at once on flounder rods! Find another patch, and try it again. We had to run through a few patches, and then Zack landed his second Mahi.
Time was up for us. Birds started working patches of weeds on the ride in. We were going to be cutting it close!
Great to see the Mahi are back. Great to see my son grin from ear to ear when he landed his fish.
Tight lines,
Jason
