Paint over Fiberglass?

I run a 1720 Key West cc, but am tired of the white background. Has anyone had luck painting over the fiberglass? I’m considering going to a neutral gray or similar color; something that doesn’t glare or show stains quite so easily.

yes marine topcoat paint works good, just clean well maybe light sand and paint levels out nicely

Thanks for the reply, Capt Ed. I’ll check that out.

Think about this. Gel coat is much harder than paint. Once you paint you have to treat the boat with much more care not to scratch the paint or you will be repainting every few years. I prefer the gel coat. I have paint now and hate it.

I understand your feelings about the gel coat. I'm thinking about that, too, which is why I haven't already done something. I just hate the white; it's too hard to keep clean, and at night a spotlight glares on the inside of the boat. If I ever buy another boat, it will be a different color, for sure. Another thought I had was to install carpeting, but I'm not sure I want that, either. What with shrimping, catfishing, and other activities, the carpet would probably be a bigger problem.

I painted the inside of my Whaler a neutral grey color for the same reasons you are talking about, and the floor got so dang hot in the summertime that no way could I go barefoot in the boat, even with sandals I found myself tossin a bucket or two of water on the floor every so often to try and cool my feet down! I finally last winter repainted the floor with a cream color and it has been a great compromise color so far. Not too bad on the glare and stays cool in the sun.

I bought a grey hightide last year and it sucks! The color started fading in no time, shows scratches 10 times worse, and is hot like mentioned above.

Good thing I bought it with the mind set of a fiberglass jon boat, otherwise I would be upset. I ended up moving it to the garage just because it was still new. Thinking seriously about just doing the boat in camo and being done with it.

As far as hot floors go, I have seen some stuff that I think is called sea dek sp? It is sold at west marine in squares that resemble raised rubber tiles. Only negative I have heard is that dirt gets stuck under them so they need to be pulled up every so often if you care about your non-skid. Oh, and they are kinda pricey too.

I’ve picked up a couple of those cheap doormats from walmart ($7.00) to throw on the deck. They are the plastic bristle / fake astro-turf style of mat. I like to put them bristles down and water flows under 'em. They double as a spiffy rub-rail protector when fishing next to pilings. I’m figuring they’ll make a suitable noise dampener for shrimping when walking around the deck and shaking out the cast net.

Thanks for all the ■■■■■■■■, guys. I think I will hold off on the color change; maybe add some matting or something like mentioned.
