Any suggestions on a good spray paint for repainting my Johnson? I just want to freshen up her looks a little. Rust-oleum, Krylon, ??? I don’t think that stuff would hold up to weel but it would be cheap and easy to touch up if I had to.

I think any of the name brands would work. Duplicolor from the auto parts store if you need to match a specific color. One of the most important things is to prep the parts you are painting. If you are painting any bare aluminum, prime with zinc chromate primer. And if you can, paint when the humidity is low and the temp. is above 70 degrees.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Boat dealers often have the OEM paint for your specific motor and it is good quality paint that lays down well once applied. I’ve purchased the Evinrude Blue and Suzuki Black from Hanckel Marine and had great results with both…perfect match even on the '97 Evinrude. It’s about twice the cost of other paints, but you get what you pay for; plus it holds up well and you will always be able to match it.

This is on my to-do list also. Any suggestions or tricks for prep work? What about decals on cowling? I want the decals but don’t want to invest in new ones. Would it work to tape over them? I think I also heard to finish with clear coat.

I found complete sets of replacement decals on eBay for $40.

Get some self etching aluminum primer from one of the auto parts stores. We used zinc chromate to paint planes when I was in the Navy but you can’t buy that stuff. Haven’t found it at WalMart before.
It is a little more expensive but the OEM paint should be available. I’d defiantly go with OEM if you aren’t gonna paint every inch of the engine and will have something to compare the new color to.
