painting bamboo

Broke the tip off of one of my 18 foot outriggers last year and don’t want to pay for replacement… I only troll 3-4 times of year so why spend all that money right??

Anyhoo,I’ve got a huge bamboo thicket close to home and was just wandering about turning two pieces into carbon poles(wink, wink black paint).

If I can find a way to paint them properly and fit them into the wishbone brackets would I be obligated to let guests know about the slight of hand of which they are about to take part in??
I mean as the boat owner what responsibility do I have ,if any,to let them know about bamboo outriggers before leaving the dock?

What say you?

cape, you need to go next door and get some tips on how to fool the public from the Space Man:smiley:

I’m thinking Rhyno Liner/Bamboo…just gotta come up wit a name…

How about Bamboozel Fiber! New stuff, just being developed and you and you’re boat, were selected as the test bed?

Honestly, I was alone and sitting down at the time.I have my own little think tank…[:I]

Hell I might just start a thread and post updates like a rebuild project or something…Might even post some pictures.

A mind, is a terrible thing to waste:wink:

Light bulbs above my head, must be a brainstorm… OK,OK here it is!!!
18 foot bamboo outriggers coated w rhyno liner that have a flounder gig on the top.
Blam!!!

Where’s a Patton lawyer when you need one?

Does Bowman need the water checked? Do you need me to send you a Taco sticker? Does Go Pro have a bamboo mount? Duck bill on the bottom? Did i not get my nap out? I need to go fishing.

Well if you’re serious.

Bamboo has a bit of a waxy coating on it. You’ll want to cut it and let it dry for best results. Scuff it well with some 150 grit sandpaper first. If the sandpaper clogs easily, the outer wax may give you adhesion problems with the paint.

In your case, obviously just cheap black Rustoluem spray cans will be your best bet.

Years ago I saw lots of boats with bamboo outriggers and beer cans strung on wire for teasers Really not a bad idea - if one breaks its easy to get a new one.

I read a book on the albatross fleet up in the outerbanks, they use bamboo outriggers and I think those guys fish pretty hard. They paint them like candy canes

Got that on my deck already, great for a non slip surface in temps under 55 degrees…Anything hotter and its kinda tricky…

A few years ago gaffed a 30-35 lb bull and threw him on the deck, had to ice him down right where he landed. When we got back to Bowman we could only get to meat off one side and let nature do the rest.
Now we got a fossil looking spot on the deck that aint going nowhere.

Dark gray rustoleum, then get a piece of screen wire and lay over that and paint it flat black. After both of those dry, clear coat with gloss polyurethane and… viola! Carbon fiber outriggers.
