wondering if anyone knew the best way to re-paint an outboard. i know where to get the paint, i am just trying to figure out the best way to prepare the motor for the paint. thanks for any suggestions.
I restored an older 25 evinrude two years ago. I used the paint stripper gel that is available at Ace Hardware to remove the old paint, and then I sanded the aluminum and fiberglass with 150 grit.
I used a zinc-chromate primer to make sure the paint held tight to the aluminum. Whole project looks great and has held up really well.
For me, the key was to strip all the way back to the metal.
I just sanded the word “Force” off mine, painted it silver, and stenciled Yamaha 4 stroke across the back. Seems to run better now.
It’s not the bait. I always smell like this.
thats one way to get a better motor bluegrunt…thanks for the replys
We did something simular once, took an old 70 evinrude electric shift and painted it Mariner grey, even put decals on it.
Got busted though… some guy at Bennetts Point looked at it and scratched his head. Wanted to know “WHY?” ![]()
