I may be in the market for a pair of 4 strokes in the near future. I’m still considering my buddy’s 30’ Scarab, but if I get it, I’m going to want to replace the engines. They’re pretty old, so I’d have to change the controls too, so at this point, brand doesn’t matter. I prefer Yamaha, Johnson, or Suzuki, but I’ll consider other brands as well.
I’m hoping to find a set of used ones in the 225-275hp range.
Anybody out there looking to repower anytime soon?
ChrisV/YamahaMan,
Do you guys have anything that might work for me?
maybe opti’s if the $$ is right, but I prefer the aformentioned…
right now it has a coupl 199x johnson vro’s.
he said they run like a scalded dog when their right, but very tempermental and thirsty.
it’s an 84 hull, but supposedly in great shape with new electronics.
There are plenty of deals to be had right now in the used large center console market if that’s what you’re looking for. I wouldn’t limit myself to a particular boat like that unless it was really really cheap. Look around; I think you’ll be surprised how cheap some of the nicer boats are right now. In some cases, some really nice, small sportfishers can be had for less money than some of the larger CCs.
i agree, and i’ve looked at a lot, but i really like the idea of having the fishability of a cc and still having a small cuddy at the bow for other stuff…
the only other boat i’ve seen like this is the intrepid, but i haven’t seen one of those under $50k.t
my boat budget is much closer to $30k

Happy boatin’ y’all!!
There are plenty of boats out there that have cuddies, and are ripe for a deal. Maybe not exactly 30, but very nicely priced. Not that the Scaraab hull is bad, but an 84 is pretty old. I can only imagine the wiring if it hasn’t been redone, and I believe 4-strokes would definitely be too heavy for an 84 boat.

That’s what I was thinking too…and that Contender would be sweet!
Threads I will not click on:
“How Did Michael Jackson Impact Your Life?”
There are a bunch of Cuddy Contenders less than 50 right now, and a million Fountain 31TEs. Just gotta sell my Key West this year, and I can guarantee I will be all over one of these suckers.
those are some really nice rides, but i’m really sold on the 4 strokes.
I’ve had both 2&4 strokes, and I just really prefer the 4’s.
A pair of 225 4’s shouldn’t weigh any more than a pair of 300 2’s should they?
It’s rated for 600 hp, so twin 225 4’s should work just fine.
Why I like 4’s:
Fuel Economy is better
You don’t have to mix oil
they’re quieter
they typically last longer
and the smell of them running doesn’t make me seasick
What horsepower motors are on it now? are they Johnson V8’s?
From what I just looked at, the 225 4-strokes from Yahaha are 583 lbs each; Suzuki 225 is 580.
According to NADA, the 199X Johnson 300 V8’s are 580 lbs each. I don’t know about
So, going by weight alone that boat should be just fine… unless the 450 HP isn’t enough to get that boat running fast, high, & dry like they’re designed to (I have no idea).
it has 225 johnson vro’s right now and runs about 65-70 mph
rated for 600 hp so i think 225 4strokes should be fine.
i’m not sold on it yet, but the price is right.
