I recently moved to the Bluffton area and looking forward to doing some Kayak fishing. I’m not very familiar with the area but I’ve read a lot about Palmetto Dunes being a good spot.
Are you allowed to fish out of a kayak in the lagoons there? If so, what is a good put-in spot?
I’ve never fished there but heard that redfish get trapped in those ponds. I’ve fished some of the freshwater ponds near dunes west and got in some trouble with the golf club people, but I don’t think you should have any trouble. I may give the lagoon a try this weekend or sometime over the summer .
I have heard it is good fishing too but have never put in over there. SpottailKing737 I like to Kayak fish too and live out in Okatie but am moving to Bluffton this fall, let me know if you are looking for a fishing buddy!
I’ve fished from the shores of the lagoons, actually seeing the yak fishers in the lagoons got me interested in it. I’ve caught reds and flounder in the lagoons
BPC, That would be great - PM your contact info. I live in Bluffton too.
So for the report - We didn’t try Palmetto Dunes. We got a late start (too many drinks the night before) and fished the incoming tide around Pinckney Island.
For the first two hours, we only caught one trout out of the 3 of us. As the water started to move into grass, I spooked a monster red (so big that I at first thought it was an alligator). I then stood up in my kayak to see several big redfish swimming around.
Ended up catching 2 redfish in the slot and had two huge ones break off. As soon as I hooked them, they took off on a big run through the grass. Next time I’ll know to take some off the drag before fishing there again. All in all, a great day on the water
All fish bit live mud minnows. I threw several artificials but they did not want anything to do with it.
