Buddy of mine decided it was time to take his new 31 Contender and check out the fishing. Left Ocean Isle at 4 am. Lines in at Blackjack at 6:30. Water temp 67. First knockdown on the long rigger about halfway to the Steeples- Bonita. 2nd knockdown 5 mins later on the planer- wahoo lost. Nothing else until we hit the Steeples and hit 70 degree water- triple knockdown- 3 tuna in the box. Trolled the Steeples along with a few other boats the rest of the day. Warmest temp was 73. Ended the trolling with 1 wahoo at 53# (lost 3 wahoo), 5 bft, 1 slinger dolphin (lost about a 15#). Hot colors were red/black, purple/black for the wahoos.
The owner of the boat also wanted to dive on the way back in. So we left the fish biting and stopped so 2 of the crew could dive. Nada. Should have kept fishing. The diving put us getting back a little late for the first trip of the year. Word of advice to those who have “testy” family members: Don’t come back late on the first trip of the year.
Sounds like a good day. Thanks for the report.
