Parasite in fillets

Anybody seeing these in there filets here lately? We caught a 22" striper near shull point today and the meat was ate up with these parasites. Also caught several small stripers around the towers and two of them had them in them as well. We have fished Murray for years and have never seen them before.

There is a lot of protein in them, good eating, Ever cleaned an amberjack?

They all appear to be in the red meat which you cut out anyway. You should be ok.

Most of them don’t harm the fish but will deterrent people from eating them.

yeah i saw a few on a couple of the ones i cleaned earlier this year. Ive lived on this lake my entire life and have never noticed them. This is the first year ive seen them, so it does seem like something has happened. I just removed the ones i saw, and cooked it nice and hot.

If I’m posting, its because I’m sitting here at work, dreaming about fishing.

From the parasite guide I have, “it would be almost impossible for parasites found in fish flesh to infect humans if the fish is cooked.” It seems that the parasites infecting musculature of fish are most often grubs (larval forms) of digenetic trematodes, with the final host being water birds. (hard for me to see a water bird eating a striper, but maybe feeding off a carcass?)

So, Cook well and close your eyes, its not going to hurt you. In fact, if you look at every fish you catch, you will find some kind of parasites of the skin, gills, organs, etc.

I have seen lots of ospreys fly off with lots of under size stripers thrown back by greedy fisherman!
