Parasites in trout

This fall I have been noticing occasional parasites in trout fillets.
Anyone else been seeing this? Doesn’t seem to be tied to any particular location or river.
Sometimes they are white and “wormy”, sometimes black “blobs”

Inspect your fillets, unless you like this extra “protein”?. Yuck

Here’s an example

Thanks for the heads-up…I have only kept six trout this year but I haven’t come across any ‘stowaways’ in the fillets yet.

Try amberjack.

oh no!

i believe cestode worms (tapeworms) are the long white ones, i’ve seen some that were a good 4-5" long when pulled out with forceps. pretty sure they’re very similar to the ones in amberjack, but a lot of these parasites are host-specific (AJ worms can’t infect a trout and vice versa) so it’s probably not the same species.

on a microscopic level, millions of myxosporidians in the muscle tissue may be why trout are mushy in warmer months… http://www.sicb.org/meetings/2014/schedule/abstractdetails.php?id=151

it’s truly better not to think about it, opti…

myxosporeans, whatever they’re called. i give away almost all the trout i keep to family, ignorance is bliss.

I think I just lost my appetite! Thanks Brock!!! Seriously though, the thought crossed my mind that these are probably just the ones big enough to see, and surely there are more. Well, more reason to release the big ones, I guess?.
Excuse me while I go barf

Have noticed them lots of times. Not only in the larger ones. Those are the fillets that go into fishing partners pile .

Cut enough and you will see parasites in ALL fish. Swordfish, Grouper, flounder, red and black drum, trout, snapper, mahi, wahoo, seen them all. Swordfish looks like a hard dog turd in the muscle. Grouper can range from pepper to 1" white or black worms. Next time you catch a mahi, open up its belly, and look at the spaghetti (round worms) and every wahoo has a thumb size, fluke worm in its belly.

Add enough lemon pepper and/or hot sauce, and you’ll never taste those worms.

Protein is protein.

Lol, I guess it all blends in when you cook it. Can’t imagine the store bought ones are any different.

350 degree oil will take of them.

The store bought fish have never had any parasites in them. They use special nets and bait that only catch fish unaffected by parasites. Similar to a T.E.D., but slightly different.

No, no, no…they have specially trained “parasite sniffer” dogs that find the infected fish.

Why do you think Penny and Fatrat take their dogs fishing?

I like having Sellsfish and barbawang as a fish resource. Between the two of them, you’ll get a straight answer. I like seeing what fish eat. The flukes in the Wahoo are the best. Never seen one without one or more in them. Wahoo salad is worth the risk…you only live once.

Sounds like the same type the striper at Murray had a few years ago!

Parasites will be gone shortly, along with the trout.
