Partially submerged tree in the ICW

Between Ben Sawyer and the IOP connector. The tree is in the middle of the channel and is pretty much covered at higher tides. According to the Coast Guard they won’t do anything about it until it becomes a hazard to navigation.

What else besides being in the MIDDLE OF THE WATERWAY does it take to be considered a hazard to navigation? The tree has been there over a week now. I hope no one hit it over the weekend. I did notice that someone put a small piece of red flagging tape on one of the exposed branches.

I saw it on Saturday morning when I was out… I also saw a crab pot buoy about 1’ under water out in front of Breach Inlet about an hour from low tide… Hopefully nobody runs over either one.

Just tow it out on your next cobia adventure and use it as a FAD.

And congrats on the City Paper best Fishing Charter award.

I saw it too. It was smack in the middle of the ICW. Stupid they don’t consider it a hazard.

CarolinaCrazyMan.

The coast guard must be run by the SC highway dept.

CarolinaCrazyMan.

At the very least they should broadcast a notice to mariners. If it was called in, I bet they would be obligated to do so. After a couple days of broadcasting, they might decide to do something about it.

Or you could also get in touch with the Navigation Branch of the US Army Corps, Charleston District. Technically the navigation channel is their responsibility.

Narcosis

I actually ran into it from Low to High about a week and a half ago coming back from Capers. My motor cut off, at the time I didn’t know why it cut off it started right back up. The next day I went back out to Capers and I saw it on low tide. It is a hazard.

What about the boat that’s half submerged about 300 yards SE off the south jetty? What’s the story on that? Someone said there was an article in the paper last week about a boat hitting the jetty but I can’t find it. Any insight?

Over the weekend the US Army Corps of Engineers, pulled the tree out of the ICW at MM 119. Not sure if this is the one you are talking about or nor Fritz.

2 shrimp boats were lost in the past month. The Shem Creek’s Lady Eva floundered while being towed for repairs after her sinking at the Wando Dock last winter. They scuttled her at Rattlesnake Shoal. I read about her in the last Tidelines Magazine.

Then the Captain Snorky, a nomadic shrimper from St. Augustine hit the south jetty and sank. I don’t know if she was salvaged or left to break apart. Looked this one up on Google.

Thanks for the reply. The Captain Snorky is the one I was referring to. Saw an article about it in the P&C yesterday.

The Spoil island across from Breech Inlet is eroding, the wax myrtles are calving off and floating around, like clockwork around the lunar tides. The prudent mariner abides…
