Kiss and release, Jimmy Houston style
Finally starting to catch nice redfish in both size and numbers. Before this week it seemed like there were only puppy drum around. Bigger reds have been eating 4-5" mullet, mud minners, and quartered crab. Flounder bite is getting hotter but I haven’t been able to find any 20"+ fish yet. Caught a few small seatrout Monday afternoon on mud minnows under a cork in the mouth of a feeder creek. Also went out to the Caudle a few days ago. Pulled a tiny Cobia out from under a huge ray I hooked and kept next to the boat. And then theres the one that got away. Saw a sea turtle coming at me and got the pitch bait ready. ~35 pounder hanging out under it. Pitched him a crab, pogie, mullet, pinfish, and a bucktail. Would follow them all back to the boat and turn around. I was getting frustrated and tried a final bait. Hooked up a single mud minnow, threw it in front of his face, and BAM! Inhaled it. Fishing by myself, fought him for about 20min. Rod in one had gaff in the other, you know how this goes…a single pop after a missed gaff shot and he was gone. Going back on Monday with a buddy to put some in the freezer.
