I wonder who will get it…

Thanks for sharing some good news Beaufort Boy. I will be reaching out to Reefmakers to see if the sub could be sunk within an existing MPA to create habitat for Warsaw Grouper and Speckled Hind.

I disagree, sink it in 100’ for recreational divers. It will generate more tourist dollars this way.

sellsfish, do you think interested parties should have a discussion about the best place to sink that sub and stand united in our call to make it happen?

Who owns that sub:question:

Not surprised, the last time I saw it the hull looked like Swiss cheese.

“The Patriots Point Development Authority plans to hand over the rusting submarine to Reefmakers, a Florida-based organization that specializes in sinking vessels to create artificial reefs.”

There is NO chance it will be sunk here in SC. We simply can’t outbid Florida. The last time we tried to acquire an aircraft carrier for an MPA reef they paid over $1,000,000 and the Navy sold it to them rather than donate it to us.

My impression is that it would not be sunk in SC waters. The problem is that someone has to pick up the tab on the cleanup which is probably millions and millions of dollars. You can’t just sink a vessel as is. They have to go in and remove all of the paint, plastic, and other hazardous materials. That type of “environment proofing” is very cost prohibitive. Unless SC can raise the necessary funds to do something like this, it will probably go to Florida.

That being said, if your goal is preserving a piece of history, then it may be worth the money. If the goal is to create a new fishing spot, then there are much more cost effective ways to do things. You can put a lot of concreted on the ocean floor with millions of dollars. That would give you way more bang for the buck if the goal is to enhance fishing.

It's not even the acquisition that is the expensive part. Even if we got an aircraft carrier for free, the cleanup, towing, berthing, inspection, etc would be way more expensive. I believe the USS Oriskany (Air craft carrier) in Pensacola was about $15-$16 million.

This thing will only be sunk if they deam it cost effective otherwise it gets sold for scrap… Let’s be realistic here most likely this thing is gonna be sold for scrap.

Never hard to spot an innovator... I like your train of thought...

It might pull apart when they try to pull it out of the mud!

Might? I’d say probably will!

I’m glad I got to see it a few times. I can’t imagine being stationed on one of the new subs. Life would really suck on that tiny boat!

skinneej, you are correct about there being much more cost effective ways to create artificial reef habitat. There are also ways to generate revenue through the free market to fund an artificial reef program. I know deep discussions about solutions are not something most people like to engage in, but it would be very helpful if a few of us would share ideas and create a plan most open-minded people can support. Refusing to offer solutions equals passive support for the IUCN/NOAA/eco-charity agenda. We need to be proactive.

I think they should line a coffer dam around all the boats and fill them up with marl, clay, crusher run or concrete and save the boats for eternity. Letting them sit in salt is going to sink them all eventually. It’d be cheaper in the long run.
