We hit Capers reef yesterday hoping to get on the sheepshead. That wasn’t to be, but the black bass were plentiful as always. I need to figure out a way to get through the swarms of them to get to the sheepshead. Anyway, we moved around to several spots and the first drop on one of them produced my Personal Best Red so far. It measured 39 inches. I don’t have a scale so couldn’t weight it. It had a beautiful copper color. Eased it back into the water and it swam off easily. Ended up with some BSBs big enough to bring home for the freezer too, but that bull red was the highlight of fishing this year for sure. Also, I played around some with a new underwater camera I bought. That was cool. It did make it all the more frustrating to see those sheepshead down there but not be able to catch them!
Nice red on the bucktail,
.
Nice red! I have found that they will kill a jig tipped with a piece of mullet.
I guess you can take a red fish out if the creek but they still love the taste of a mullet!

Nice fish. Bet that was fun! I would also like to know how to get away from the bsb. I have noticed when you move to a new spot you might get one or two sheepshead as soon as you drop down then the bsb show up again. Move to a new spot, same thing. I know moving around is key but it takes a little minute to do and get anchored again. I just want to sit in one place and catch them like we use to a few years back.
BSB have become so thick on the reefs that there is not going to be a “like we use to a few years back”. Remember the old days of 30 fish limit and 10" size limit? Now it’s 5 @ 13. At some point it needs to go to at least 10 @ 13.
Sorry not trying to hijack the thread…Nice Red BTW…

What underwater camera do you have? I have been wanting to get one to mess around with.
Well, as far as the red, I think I was in the right place at the right time. It was the first drop on that spot so maybe it sneaked through the BSB. The min kota ipilot is really the cat’s meow out there on those reefs. You pull up, find just the right spot on the sonar, and hit Spot Lock. Boom, no dropping anchor. You can hit 3 or 4 times the spots at least with it since u don’t spend so much time anchoring. Highly recommend it. I got a Marcum underwater camera. Didn’t end up using it as much as I thought I would, but man you can see all the other fish in addition to the swarms of BSB down there. Excellent image quality. Toys.

I got one for xmas…I have all the wiring batteries set up but haven’t been able to get down to the boat (boat is in Charleston and I’m in NC) on a nice day to get it mounted yet. I’m super psyched about it. Anchoring is such a *****

How does that IPilot work compared to traditional anchoring? Do you swing around a lot, or does it lock in pretty well? Any negatives? I’ve been looking at getting one for my new inshore rig, but am having a tough time justifying the extra expense. They sure are proud of those motors!
This is a rig Realfish01 came up with to check viz on the bottom and what the sonar was showing! Amazing the things we have seen on the video. Schools of ribbon fish, wreaks and a Lobster that crawled out of a hole to check out the camera. Sometimes the sonar shows Good structure and it will be bait so thick the sonar can’t see through it! Wasted dive.Good for locating Sheeps on the near shore wreaks this time of year.

If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.
