Penn 430ss

I acquired a Penn 430ss a couple of years ago. I have never used the reel because the handle makes contact with the bail wire when reeling. It occurs about every 7th or 8th rotation.

Looking at the image can anyone tell if original bail wire or handle has been replaced? Does the bail wire appear to be bent? Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Take it to Hadderals they will fix you right up.

I wish I could but I live in Greenwood, SC.

ACS,
_ I have numerous early 430’s. Your bail wire and handle look like proper originals. Judging by your pic, the bail wire doesn’t look like it is out of form, unless it is bent downward, toward the foot. The handle’s too hard to tell at that camera angle to rule out the shaft being bent inward.
_ Where exactly do the handle & bw come into contact with each other, at the bend in the bw on the roller side? I took some pics of mine for comparison, but don’t have a clue how to post.

I’ve attached a picture showing where contact is made. Thanks for your help.

To post a picture…

  • “Insert an Image File” (just below text box)
  • “Choose File” then select your image
  • “Upload File”

That is how I did it but I have seen where others have had difficulty attaching photos.

Thanks ACS,
_ I used the ‘quick reply’ form for my first message which didn’t offer image download.

_Sorry for the poor focus, these were the ‘best’ pics of about 48 from
my cheap Kodak.

_ Anyway, I hope these angles and scaled images will help you compare
them to your reel. Like I say, your handle assembly and bail wire
appear to be original, but, even if the handle shaft is bent inward,
the knob end shouldn’t be that high above the bw. The handle shaft
should be projected outward, at a slight angle, away from the reel
and bail wire. I can’t tell if your bw is also bent down that far or
not.

Edited: I’ve since compared bail wires with the 4300ss (different part

than the 430ss, but fits) and the 4300 has a slightly bigger radius

that extends a 1/8"+ more outward, but if your bw would be from a
4300, it still shouldn’t ride that much lower than the handle knob,
unless the bw’s bent.

Let me know what you find, or if you need any more info. Good luck,

The shaft length from pin to pin (center to center) was 2 1/8"

I don’t have the reel in front of me, but based on your photos I believe that the wire is the problem. Your bail wire appears to have a much greater angle (upward) after it comes off the line roller and it’s almost as if the knob of your handle would travel under the wire at the point where mine is making contact.

I will update once I take some more pictures or get this resolved.

Thank you very much for your time and effort.

I had a chance to revisit this and now I’m confused. It looks like the bail wire is fine but it’s almost as if the bail closes “too far”. Hopefully someone can come to a conclusion based on the picture. Maybe a spring replacement or an adjustment that can be made? Any help would be appreciated.

Wow nice effort Trams on pics and research. People like you
sir are what makes this sight great .

Sorry ACS,
Haven’t checked CF lately. Been out of town the last few days & won’t be back till the weekend. I will look over my 430ss and try to see what would create that condition. Seems I can’t quite recall, but I remember seeing something similar, whether breakage or incorrect assembly. Will get back to you.

Thanks Wicked,
CF has been a valuable resource to me while trying to navigate ‘the learning curve’ over my last seven years here. Been mostly lurking, while cutting and pasting my own compilation of notes from the many fine folks, who take the time to post a lot of helpful advise and info. Since I haven’t yet achieved ‘guide status’, lol, with little to contribute, I’m just glad to offer something that I am familiar with. Like so many of us, I love this sport a lot more than I’m good at it.

I’m heading for the coast in a couple of weeks and I’m tired of leaving this reel behind. So I finally broke down and bent the bail wire at the arm. Reel seems to be functioning properly. Going to put on some 20 lb PP and see what happens.

trams55 - thanks again for all of your help. I would hate for you to go through anymore trouble and I was probably going to end up bending the wire if I was ever going to use this reel.

Not a problem, ACS,
