Penn and Shimano

Just curious as to what yalls favorite reels are…i personally love shimano and that’s all that’s on my boat. Just wondering because I seem to see an even mixture of both…

Penn. Both are great. I prefer Penn because thats what my grandfather swore by and I still have a bunch of his old offshore reels, greenies, spinfishers etc that are over 40 years old and still work like new. You can’t go wrong with either one. Especially, the higher end reels.

If two wrongs don’t make a right, try three.

Penn and Okuma are on my loaner rods for spinning and bottom gear. Trolling gear is all Penn Int with one Shimano Tyrnos and one Fin Nor Santiago. Shimano are on my bottom rigs and casting gear with the exception of one Avet that I really am liking.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I really like Shimano and have several. I have one Okuma that I am equally impressed with. I’ve heard that Penn’s are great but don’t own one yet. Maybe the next reel that buy.

I just did a quick search and I see both are made in china , Japan and other places too . I think some penns are made in the USA but how can you tell , really . If the specks are met by outsources what difference does it make .

I just got 2 sets (in the mail) a 7’ power stick penn rod of which I paid $49 and a penn fierce 6000 of which I paid $62.55 .The rods are rated 12 - 30# line and up to 1 1/4 oz . The reels are rated 20# drag and 220 yards of 12 # mono or 310 yds of 50 # braid …or.445 yds of 30# braid.

They worked great in thee back yard but I only have grass back there . I think I will be pleased tho.

I got these because I had a power stick for several years with other penn reels which I have been pleased with . Time will tell .

It might come one day we will have to go to China to have babies :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for the support fishingpox. Each PENN reel that is made in the USA is marked with an American flag on our web page and the product is marked. Also 33% of our reels are made here in the USA. In most cases anything over $300 is made in the USA. We are relaunching the 704 and 706z this year and they will retail for $200 and made in the USA.

Love my P Conquer’s.

I have fished tons of Penn and Shimano reels. The reels I have used inshore from penn end up generally disappointing me with broken parts and much shorter life spans then the shimanos I fish. You will not see any Penn stuff in my skiff as I have given up on them and have no interest in trying out the “newest model that is supposed to be way better” as they claim each time a new model is released. I am not associated with either company in any way, I just fish alot and put a beating on the equipment that I use so I am unbiased here. When it comes to my offshore gear I have a bunch of older Internationals that have been pretty indestructible to me, I also have several of the new V series Internationals and am pleased with them. The one complaint I would have is on the V series two speed reels, the push button speed selector on the handle is made of weak metal that is prone to breaking easily when they bump into anything hard. In a nutshell only Shimano for inshore for me and I am satisfied with my Penn gear for offshore. Shimano also makes some (**() good offshore stuff but I don’t own much of it.

Captdan, you are correct on the two speed buttons. They use to be made of plastic and break/crake if they ever go hit hard enough. I would say probably a year ago we changed them over to metal so if you have some busted two speed buttons PM me with your address and qty and I?ll take care of you. As for the inshore gear I would like to know more about the inshore gear you have used in the past that did not live up to your standards (PM ME). I agree there was a lot of junk reels put out by the previous owners of PENN (Captiva, Silverado, GTO) a few years back that burnt some people and left them with a bad experience. The new gear speaks for itself.
