Penn Battle 6000

I’m thinking of purchasing a Penn Battle 6000 for some surf fishing. Any thoughts??

Should work fine for the surf. Any Penn 6000 size reel would work well. I use a Penn Spinfisher 7500 as one of my surf reels and have 5000 and 6000 size Penn’s I use as well.

I’d go with the spinfisher V over the battle especially for surf fishing ! The battles are not sealed and will be needing a rebuild in no time ! The spinfisher a are sealed so less likely chance of getting water in them . And not to mention the drag on the spinfisher is more than you’ll ever need but nice to know its there if you need it . I’ve got a pair of the spinfisher v 6500 with 50lb braid on 8’ shimano terramar XH rods and they have performed well on some very large sharks , 1 tarpon and a few monster reds.

I have a Battle 4000 and absolutely hate it. The nut under the spool has to be tightened after every trip.

I’m buying nothing but Shimano from now on.

The new Saragosa SW is an awesome reel, tons of drag, and FULLY SEALED. Neither the Battle or Spinfisher are completed sealed. The Spinfisher only has a sealed dual drag system. If you were wanting to stick with the $100 range, I would take a peak at a Diawa BG90, it isn’t sealed but it is a work horse only 3 bearings a lot less to go wrong than in the Battle or Spinfisher. The Battle is a great reel for different applcations. Same as with the Spinfisher.

Hurricane according to penns website the spinfisher has a total of 6 seals 3 on the drag system and the rest protecting water from getting into the gear box . And the 6500 series reels have 30lbs of drag more than enough you will ever need .

The Spinfisher 7500 I’ve use in the surf is the last generation and is not sealed. I have fished with it for 3 or 4 years in the Surf without a problem. Wash it with fresh water after every trip and it still works as good as new.

If it was my money. I would spend it on the Saragosa. But that wasn’t in the opening discussion. I would for sure not fish a Battle in the surf. The least expensive step up would be the SpinfisherV and would work for ya.

Hoofarded that’s a rare but a simple fix and I would be more than happy to send you the locking washer that holds that nut in place.

That happened to my 3000 on the first trip out. I got the nut tight up against the set screw head - its never happened again. That was 2+ years ago & its my go to reel. Its used more than anything I own…

For the surf - are you going to be swimming out to sandbars or rocks, or will you be casting from the beach and shallow water?

If the latter - the battle 6000 will be fine.

The issue with the Battle rotor hold down nut is not rare, but is a simple fix. All three of my Battles required tightening. Between initial assembly and a few uses the component are taking a set. I have not take a close look to see exactly how as after tightening they have been fine thereafter.

Shimano spheros. It’s the Saragossa without all of the bells and whistles, kinda. Get a 6000 spheros, fish it, dunk it, whatever…mine are all as tough as nails! Check out Haddrells as they have great prices on Shimano stuff. Talk with Robert over in West Ashley and he’ll hook you up. Really, Spheros is tough dude!
