I’ve got a nice, newer Penn 750SS, but the newer “Captiva” line has caught my eye.
Any experiance with them? Can they take a beating like the other reel?
Thanks!

Funny you mention that particular reel, I got on this morning to ask about the same line of reels. They also make one in that line called a “live line” I believe. Looks like a nice reel for the money. I’d be interested in hearing what others have to say about it. Hope you don’t mind me piggy-backing on your thread.
I actually just got done reading reviews from owners on Bass Pro’s website.
Seems like for “light” use, it’s a good reel.
Any stress, and there have been snappings off the rod along with stripped drags in no time.
Someone also said the quoted 11 bearings don’t do anything b/c many don’t touch moving parts.
Lastly, a couple users mentioned paint flaking off after first use.
Guess Penn’s going downhill just like everyone else.

I would definitely consider spending an extra 15 to 20 bucks and picking up the Sargus over the Captiva. That Sargus is built like a tank and the reviews you have read on the Captiva’s speak for themselves.

Good to know, I guess I’ll look at the Sargus.
Sorry, one more question. I know you can vary the size line you put on the spool but what would be a good “all around” size reel? I mainly fish fresh and saltwater, inshore for whatever will bite.
Also, I did notice that on Penn’s website that they stated the following:
Penn has updated and upgraded one of their proven sellers, the Captiva Spinning reels. They strengthened the frame while still maintaining a sleek appearance; the result is a graphite body reel with less flex. An upgraded handle now threads directly into the main gear, thus creating an extremely solid feel with no backplay. The 2nd generation of Captiva reels is here.
I wonder if the comments about the captivas were the 1st generation reels?

I actually have 2 of the Live Line reels (7 ft. ugly stik MH rods) and have had them for a little under a year. Been great fishing with them and I've put them through the ringer. As with anything, you get out of them what you put in them. Clean them after use and keep them oiled and they should be just fine. The Sargus feels like a sturdier reel, but for the $$ and just using them inshore, the captiva's have been great. Hope this helps.

For trout I use an AF1000 - 140/6
For reds I use an AF3000 - 185/10
Hope this helps

What is the difference between the live line and the standard captiva and what size reels do you use? Also, the more I look into reels, the more questions it seems I come up with. Are they front drag or rear? Does it make any real difference? I kind of prefer rear drag.

I have the CLL 4000. these reels have 9+1 bearings and a 5.5-1 reeling ratio. the live liner part just free spools live bait when you’re after aggressive fish that like to grab and haul ass. As far as the drag goes, these are front drag but I don’t think either makes a difference, just personal preference.

Thanks, based on the price, it sounds like it might be worth trying out. It seems that some of the negatives I read on the net were regarding the 1st generation Captivas and not the 2nd. I just picked up some Shimano rods at a pretty good price so that should set me up pretty good. Now if I can just find the fish.
Thanks all!
