Penn Carnage 1 vs 2 Jigging Rod

I currently own the Penn Carnage (65-100 lbs) Jigging Rod on a Spheros 8000 and switching it over to my 10000 series. Couldn’t be happier with my original carnage and want to outfit my 8000 with one size smaller (30-80 lbs). I noticed Penn has came out with the Carnage 2 for $179 which is $50 more then the original Carnage. The only difference I can see is the new SLS3 blank construction and was wondering if anyone has tried or noticed a difference in the two and if its actually worth the extra $50?

Once get in that price range I would at much better rods than penn.

What is your suggestion? Shimano Trevala?

I wasn’t planning at all to switch to a Shimano Trevala. I’m able to crank up anything with my Penn Carnage with no problem. Just trying to figure out if the 2 is worth the squeeze.

Trevala is garbage. I mean the blank difference is big but that’s a lot of $ for a rod when get custom jigging rods around same range

If you switch over to a Shimano Terez 7 foot rod you will never go back to any other rods. It is a multi-purpose fish killer. You can throw 7 inch popping plugs, or drop live bait to the bottom.

Used to have a penn carnage that was phenomenal until some spikjack took it to the bottom of edisto banks, i really liked it, excellent feel and power. Have a shimano trevala that i would not buy again, or at least not that particular one, not nearly enough beef to it. I have lost more than a few fish to the rocks with it. I havent tried the new carnage yet. On another note, had a penn ally that snapped on me, not impressed, but they sent me a replacement for free and it has held up well to big fish… Maybe i got a defective one?

I am on my third trevala rod, since last year. First one broke on the second trip, 2nd one broke on its first trip out. Shimano replaced them quick but the damage was done. I will stick with penn all my penn rods are still going strong.

those carnage II rods maybe have a different guide system on the spinners and a different reel seat and beefed up guide wraps. they are a good rod for the price. they are not a calstar or black hole, but they are fairly priced sticks that will usually last, and if not penn stands behind them. next up from them i really like the star plasma rods, next down ugly stick tiger jigging rods

PS trevalas do suck

I have a black hole carbon fiber, multiple 5 foot eight, XXH Trevalla rods , Terez 7’ spinning and a couple of tiger light jigging Rod’s., I have broken multiple carnage rods, The tiger lite rods do not have the backbone needed for large bottom fish. Nothing can beat the blackhole carbon fiber rod for absolute power. The terez comes in a close second… If you carry your Trevalla rods in the bed of a pick up and you nick the fiberglass it will explode when you put it under pressure . I fished a tuna sniper with large popping plugs last year and could not see any reason to pay over $400 for that rod. I love the tsunami jigging rods, but they are very pricey. If I had to pick one rod and reel combination to use for everything it would be my Stella 18000 on a 7’ XH Terez.

Black hole rods are easy find in 200-250 range. I have 4 and willing let you fish one. You will fall in love.

Appreciate the suggestions. Unfortunately, I am only trying to outfit my 8000 Spheros for the Hump & Snapper Banks so I don’t want to go overboard on the rod just yet. Jotted some notes so when I decide to get off some $$$ and get a 14000+ reel I know what rod to use to catch some tuna & bigger creatures.

Stick to 8k for any bottom. No need for larger. It’s charleston. We ain’t bottom fishing in 400ft lol
