Penn Reel

I have an opportunity to buy a brand new Penn Pursuit II 6000(reel only) for about half of what they cost on line or in a store. A friend of mine won it in a raffle and doesn’t want it so he offered it to me. While I love a deal, I don’t know anything about these reels, what rod to pair it with, what line to put on it, or what I would fish for with it. I have just never used spinning reels that big. Maybe a surf fishing setup? Offshore bottom fishing (which I rarely ever get to do)? I’ll probably get it because it is a good deal and he could use the money, but I am open to suggestions as to what to do with it.

6000 size reel would work for fishing at the jetties or grillage and would work fine for surf. No problem using a reel that size inshore either if you want too. I imagine you could spool it with 12 or 15 pound mono and pair it with a 7 foot 10-17 or 12-20 rated rod. Really pretty versatile what you could use it for. If its half the cost you couldn’t go wrong getting it.

I wouldn’t recommend fishing that reel from the surf. As none of the ball bearings are sealed. If you can pick it up for under $30. I don’t think it would be a bad purchase and is definitely useful in the Lowcountry. 6000 is good for larger redfish at the Jetties and pier fishing. It would be overkill for trout and flounder though.

I was thinking maybe reds, but I typically use a spinning reel in the 3 or 4 class, but I can get it for $30. So I am thinking of maybe a 7’ 20lb class rod with 30lb braid. The thing will hold 450 yards of 30lb braid. If I do that, I’ll have more money in the line than the reel. At least I’ll be setup for those 40+ inch reds that I catch so often .

I would put it on a the lightest Trevala, dual purpose Reds and bottom fishing for when you make it out.
