Penn Sargus 4000 reel and 7' Slammer rod sale

Not to speak for Mike, but what makes it a better reel is A.) Line Propulsion spool and system. Far less wind knots with braided line due to small lip under line roller, and angled spool lip will cast lighter lures further B.) Less physical weight C.) Better ergonomic handle, especially on smaller sizes D.) simply smoother E.) Sells 3 to 1 in comparison F.) smoother drag system, again especially on smaller sizes

The sargus is a solid reel, no doubt. We do well with them, but the above is the ■■■■■■■■ I get from customers on a daily basis and from fishing them both myself. You will be happy with both, but my preference goes to brand ‘S’ in this price range.

Nasty, If you are product Manager I am sure we have had to have met at some point. After all, I’ve been selling the product for 10 years locally and have helped make many a payroll checks at Penn. If I was you I would not take a lil criticism personally but maybe use it to see where maybe there was a touch of room for improvement in the product…just IMO

I was in Haddrells the other day and looked at the Sargus reels, They were heavy compared to Shimano’s similar sized reels. That was a difference maker in itself to me. Right now, I am fishing with Quantams but am looking to replace them this year.

reelhunter pretty much hit it on the head… On paper your reel seems “tougher” or whatever, but the reality of the matter is, I sell more shimanos… and fix more Penn… For the money the Sargus is a good little reel, but to say its the best is just not right… and side by side with the shimano it is just out classed…

But just like I said before… this is just my opinion, and should be taken as such… mine carries no more weight than yours Nasty…

Stretch, you don’t find the Medalist to be heavy? Ever used the Pflueger Supreme and if so, does it hold up in salt (not rated for salt on their website)? Symetres on sale now?

I agree and with the Symetres being on sale at Haddrells for 79.95, it is a hard reel to beat at that price.

Nasty, I started using Penn products long before you were a product manger[I guess] and I still have several reels that I go to from Penn.

Penn went through some tough times regarding quality while at the same time Shimino was coming on strong with great product. I know that Penn has been doing better stuff but that is my 2 cents.

I know it is your job to sell Penn so I know you are somewhat biased.
I am not paid to fish anything so when one of my 20 plus reels craps the bed, I will replace it with what is the best at that time. Right now that is Shimino in my eyes.

what you need to gather is that I am happy to sell solid products, and use them. You seem very uptight about this whole thing sir. no one said that the reel was crap, just that it wasn’t the best for under a hundo.

I get no perks from shimano when selling their product, and I certainly do not get paid to plug Penn or Pure fishing stock.

I do however, get paid to make sure my customers are equipped with gear that they will hopefully not bring back for anything other than perhaps a yearly service.

15 years ago my customers would have walked out with more penn reels than shimano…

and to answer the weight issue of the medalist:

the pfleuger medalist is a touch on the heavy side. but it’s smooth and holds up well. I fish both them and the presidents, plus the shimano reels mentioned regularly and have been treated very well.

symetre…little oil once a year…great reels

that is unless Penn wants to pony up a sponsorship

This post seems a lot shorter than it was yesterday…

And for what its worth I personally put more stake in the opinion of the staff at my local tackle shop over the opinion of the sales rep. We all know where the sales rep will fall, but the local shop has hundreds, if not thousands, of different customers input to draw from ranging from the novice angler to the recreational to the pros.

Actually, after telling Scott that I was the one who won it, he had me come in and upgrade the rod. Fished it Saturday with Miclite and was happy with the feel on casting and retrieve. We got skunked, so i don’t have anything to say either way about the drag. I’ve been happy with my other Shimano’s so i don’t expect this one to be anything different. Scott would have taken it from if he thought i wouldn’t be happy with it. Maybe i can put a fish on it this weekend, and i’ll have a little more to say about it.
