on sale now at Charleston Angler while supplies last…$69
the rod is a 7’, 2 piece, 8-17lbs line…it’s ■■■■ near like getting the reel for $10 off and the rod for free…I picked up 3 today…I know there has been some discussion recently about Penn Sargus reels and this deal was just too good to pass up…
animal cruelty sucks…unless his lip hurts cause there is a 1/0 Owner Aki hook with a chinaback stuck in it
i almost closed the “CF.com” window on the computer and headed out to get another set of bearings for the one my trailer hemorrhaged on the way to the ramp yesterday.
west nasty, look out, i got spring fever and a credit card! i’ll report on how many are left if i can grab one… thanks bonzo!
Better bang for your buck in a reel is the Shimano Sahara or Symetre (since their both priced the same on many occassions) OR if you want to go the Pure Fishing (Penn, Berkley, Pfleuger, etc) The Pfleuger Medalist or President is hands down the more bullet proof reel in the 80 to 100 dollar range.
Diawa BG reels are also super durable for under $80, but they lose in the smoothness category of the two mentioned.
This strong opinion is due to personal experience and what I see come through the shop into our repair room…good reel? yes. The best reel for the money? there’s others
The above being said, 69 dollars for a Sargus combo is a good deal. Anyone with the money would do well to get a few to have around for guests to use. Just saying that I wouldn’t use it as a “daily driver”.
They have two sizes that have an aluminum body and the rotor and side plates are graphite (aka Plastic). The Sargus has an aluminum body, rotor, and side plates across the board on all sizes for precise gear alignment and strength.
I fished these 4000s this past weekend and was pleased with them…the 7’, 2 piece Slammer rod is ok, but at this price point I am happy with what I got…

on paper is fine, but the proof is in the pudding.
cold hard fact is that I sell, see, talk about, fish with, and around the reels spoken about.
the black reel is outperformed by the shimano and overall better liked by my customers (who by the way we thank graciously for the support). I want their purchases to be lasting. I can’t move sell GULP! jerk shads to someone someone’s who’s reel is in the shop.
Anywho, best bang for the buck? IMO it’s the Pfleuger Medalist, then the Symetre followed by sahara…
and ND, if you care to read, time and again the symetre is on sale for 79.99, that’s the reason it was on the list.
Either way, i was just adding a little personal insight on some things that I happen to see more than the average joe.
Is the Sargus a crappy reel? No. is it the best bang for the buck? No.
Would I buy the sargus if it’s price point was say…59.99? yes. Would I feel comfortable putting a reel of that caliber in a customers hands for that price? absolutley.
Just my 2 cents, but right now I’m thrilled with my Okuma Trio reels. I have 4; 2 30’s and 2 40’s. I’ve only got a few times fishing them, but the drag is silky smooth and the 30 took on multiple reds over the past few days up to 32 inches. The 40 brought the 34 inch red to the yak with ease.
on paper 9 +1 bearings, light weight, 18 lbs drag, 10.3 oz for the 30 and 20 lbs drag 11.0 oz for the 40
I plan to fish them HARD personally and in my guid eservice, so only tim ewill tell if they’re super durable. They are covered by a 1 year warranty.
The quality of bearings in a saltwater reel, I feel, are much more important than the number. 4 to 6 +1 is a good number for spinning reels and 3-5 +1 for baitcasters. When I see low to moderately priced reels with 8+ bearings I get worried because 1. what is the quality of those bearings? And 2. where are they all at and how well are they protected?
Personally I am a Penn supporter, but I fish Shimanos as well and like them very much. Interestingly both Shimanos were gifts, so other than a Shimano Calcutta that I got rid of because it was a pain to maintain I have never bought another Shimano product. Will I in the future, yes. My latest purchase was Penn Slammers though. Until Shimano can put start using a line roller bearing (on $150-$200 reels) that doesn’t seize up after a year of use with my overkill maintenance I will continue to be reluctant on their products. I know its minor, but I have never had to replace a line roller bearing on a Penn.
Salesman or Product Manager? Who knows more about product? I’ll let you figure that one out Stretch. Good 2 cents though! Also, I would like for you to tell us all how the sahara out performs the Sargus.
well if you want a less biased opinion I say that stretch’s opinion carries more weight… Of course your reel is the best…
Hell my flies catch more fish than any flies ever made… it must be a fact, I make them and I just said it!
Just for the record… My shop has proven the same results as stretches in the past few years…
Not saying the Sargus is a bad reel… but if’n I was not getting a deal on one, and I was looking between the two… my money will end up on the shimano every time… JMHO
