looking to get a large capacity conventional reel for paddling shark baits out on the surf but will be on a budget. i found the 9/0 for $150 and it says its rated for 700 yards of 50lb mono. i plan on putting on 300ish yards of 100lb power pro then filling the rest with 80lb mono. any thoughts?
Your gonna need a fighting belt and one heck of a sand spike to surf fish with that rig. On the other hand it will look cool as heck!!!

I have 2 Diawa sealine 9/0 reels with heavy rods. One is a shakespeare rod and one is a trolling rod with a metal screw and reel seat (forgot the brand). Both have 400 yrds of 80lb mono. I looking for $150 a piece if you are interested. Both are in Great shape, used approx 5 times.
ONN, I think you’d be better off with a large spinning reel for surf fishing, unless you can cast a 9/0 conventional a lot farther than I can. That’s a mighty big reel for surf fishing, unless Mary Lee happens by
Edit: I see where you said you would paddle out the baits, so casting may not be an issue, but that is still a LOT of reel for the surf!

Thats a big flipping reel. For Mako tournaments we used 4/0 and 6/0 Senators - with Mako up to 200#'s taken on the 4/0.
A 6/0 spooled with 500 yards of 50-70# braid would be more than enough reel.
Unless Mary Lee shows up.
reelscout: i appreciate the offer but im a few hours away from charleston now…otherwise id def consider that offer.
cracker larry: looking at her previous hits she seems to like jacksonville along with charleston and i have some big frozen barracuda pieces in the freezer ha not actually after mary lee but theres a spot or two nearby with some sandbars that are a bit of a paddle out and locals tell me 7 footers arent uncommon. i also use 2 spinning reels but they dont have the capacity to reach a few of the spots i found and allow for a hard run. this would actually be the ONLY conventional/baitcasting reel id own…i HATE casting those things! aside from being a really big reel the drag handles fine and they stand up to abuse…right?
Plenty tough enough for that kind of fishing. Like Dorado said though, if you hook something that you need a reel that large for, you better have a fighting belt and your feet well planted. A 7’ shark doesn’t need anything near that big.

It’s been a little over 3 years since I left working with PENN as the associate prod manager, but I’d say you’re making a good choice with that reel for land based shark fishing. You’re going to need the extra line capacity for good sized sharks. I bought one for my cousin who’s down in Charleston, and he can attest firsthand that something that large is absolutely needed unless you want to spend the bigger bucks on TRQ series or the Squall reels. The benefits of the others are less weight, stronger gearing, 2 speeds (in some models), and all in a smaller package. The Senator is a dang fine reel with a proven heritage to be the boss on any fish though. Like the others said, a belt would be a good idea too.
NastyDawg took my spot when I left so he could give you more info in you need. Shoot him a PM if you’d like.
