I have been using Penn Squall 50 single speeds and some shimano ltd 25s with no problem. Slowly going to buy some internationals over the next year. But really looking at the 2 speed Squall reels.
Anyone on here used them? If so what did you think of them?
I have seen a squall melt under the pressure of a big wahoo now granted we were fishing Bahamian wahoo so I can understand but only reason reel was put out was to test the integrity of the reel to what it would hold up to. I don’t think it’s on the same level as the international and wouldn’t hold up as long in my opinion. But as far as a budget reel I believe it would work fine around here cause typically we fish with 80w for Bahamian hoos. But as for me personally I feel the tld50 two speed is a better reel and Tiagras are my favorite. If you spend the money once on good equipment you shouldn’t have to buy anymore with proper service and care just my o2
I’ve used a few different models of squall’s and have even used them side by side with TLDs both were like the 25 or 30 model and I liked the way the squalls felt better, but so far them and the tlds only have a season on them so no long-term comparison. I have caught a few big fish on the 60ld, the biggest test was a 20 minute fight at full drag with like a 7ft sand bar in 200ft of water and it had no problems. Never used there 2 speed or 50w though.
Chad they were the two speed. I think they would be fine for dolphin, your normal 40 to 60lbs wahoo. We tried it high speed trolling for giggles and reel did ok but did not hold up when we got a big girl on drag washers melted to the side plate. I would not advice using them as a high speed reel or planer rod reel cause I just don’t think they will hold up to the pressure over time but who knows maybe we had bad one but I don’t think so. I’m sure there are plenty of guys using them with no problems and everybody will have their own opinion of what works for them. I just know we won’t be using them any more for that type of application but was fun while it lasted lol

Just reel or get broke
High speed trolling is a different game! I’m not sure if any graphite 50’s would hold up to big wahoo when high speed trolling. You got guys getting the rod holders ripped from the gunnels – that’s a tremendous amount of drag!
