Penn's new spinfisher!!!

It’s not out yet BUT it’s on there website and looks really sleek not to mention you can get it with a live liner, baitrunner, whatever you call it. I think I might get one if the reviews are good, might give my Shimano baitrunner a run for it’s money. I think it’s Nasty Dog who is associated with penn, sorry if I’m wrong, but do you know anything on it?

Dayum. Looks nice!

Yeah it does!

I’m a high class redneck.

Fishing is a delusion entirely surrounded by liars in pfgs and buffs.

Looks like a Slammer on steroids which is good. My only complaint with the slammers is that the drag pressure is limited on the larger sizes; the drag is one of the smoothest though. The new design looks like it doubles the drag. Looks like my quest for cost effective jigging reel to replace my heavy old Fin Nor Ahab 16 with a modified drag may have ended.

Whats also nice is it’s completely sealed and has a huge, beeefed up bail wire. Should be great for jigging.

why is the bail wire aluminum?
it’s listed as if this is some improvement/benefit/desirable feature…

Maybe aluminum is better. The bail takes a lot of abuse on spinners, so the finish the thing’s got on it is pretty important.

IMO, the weakest part of a spinner used for offshore fishing is
1)bail wire; specifically, corrosion at ends of it(because of dissimilar metals or poor coating) causing it to break OR weak material causing the bail to bend easily and eventually break
2)bail roller; needs constant maintenance

The old spinfishers used to have a bail that would bend up like a coat hanger if you didn’t treat them like fragile packages on the boat. Will be interesting to see if this stronger bail has any problems that aren’t related to strength per-se.

The drag and other mechanical features appear to be much improved. Would like to know what drag pressure causes the one-way bearing to fail and the “back up ratchet” to be the only anti-reverse, and how much slop at that point? Anti-reverse isn’t as big of a deal on a spinner since you engage the bail a bit more slowly, but anti-reverse is always an issue if dealing with high drag pressures.

If nasty dawg is reading this- I’d be happy to show Penn what happens to the reels if they are fished hard.

By the looks of the frame, they focused on making it lighter which is a great thing in my book. The SSMs are solid reels, they’re just a bit heavy for me for regular use.

That is a beautiful reel! I would love to try one out!

Anyone know what the price point of these new reels with be?

I would think around $180.

I’ve been looking into this reel too. looks like a great value, with a ton of quality features.

here’s some info from a penn rep i found on another forum (hope it’s legit to post this…happy to remove if anyone’s feathers get ruffled):

Gears main gear is Al/Zn alloy, the pinion is brass. Same materials used in the SSm, Slammer, and Conquer. We believe the current gear material to be more than adequate in terms of strength and durability at these price points, and when compared to the competition. The reality is that to offer a machined brass or stainless main gear would drive the cost through the roof, increasing the retails by roughly $75-$100. Increasing the retail on one of our best selling spinning reels by this margin does not make sense.we need to keep the retail on this reel within reach of our core PENN customers. That being said we have heard the ■■■■■■■■ loud and clear on the desire for an upgraded main gear, and we are researching this option for future projects. Just so there is no misunderstandingthe retail on a spinning reel with a machined main gear will be somewhere in the $250-$300 neighborhood.

Gear ratio 6.2:1 is a high speed retrieve, when combined with a smaller spool like we have on the 3500 size (13.4oz)30 is close to the industry standard. Check any other reel in this size range and youll see what I mean. You may see 31-33 from the competition, but keep in mind they measure IPT (inches per turn) from the outside diameter of the spool, we measure it by the definition of a full spool of line (our 3rd line capacity ring), which is noticeably less than the full diameter of the spool…so to be fair we are not comparing apples to apples. Our definition is much more realistic, nobody can fish a spool that is 100% full (90% is much more realistic), and we refuse to embellish our specifications (IPT, Max Drag, Weight, etc).

Seals this is a watertight system, not a fully sealed system like the Torque, there is a difference. The Spinfisher V has 6 seals, the Torque has 7. The Spin

Great update!

Mind providing the link where you found this in case there are updates there?

… gone fishing

A little out of my price range. I’ll keep my fingers crossed I win one.

sure thing- here’s the linK

http://www.stripersonline.com/t/852898/penn-spinfisher-v

great resource- these guys really beat their equipment (primarily surf fisherman), and the reviews tend to have more detail than i know what to do with.
as a side note, looks like the spinnfisher just won best of show for saltwater reels at iCast (credit to YnR for that tidbit)

Sorry I have been out of town for a few weeks at the Icast show in Orlando where we were showing off the new Spinfisher V (Which won the best saltwater reel award). If anyone has any questions on the new SSV please let me know. The post we posted on Striper’s Online (above) answers most of the questions I saw on here. these reels are a serious piece of equipment and the drag system is killer. Check out the PENN youtube channel as there are several video’s on the new SSV. http://www.youtube.com/user/pennfishing?feature=results_main.

AFFILIATED WITH PENN FISHING TACKLE [http://www.pennreels.com/]

Now that they are out at the ICAST show 2 weeks ago, does anyone in Charleston have one yet (Haddrells, Charleston Angler, etc.?)

Just looked in the garage and between me and my dad we own at least one of every spin fisher. So of course I’ll have to continue that.

Three-fourths of the Earth’s surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.

Expected release date is Oct.
