My brother in law and myself decided to try the perch out of Johns creek since up lake is mudy. We caught 58 of some of the largest perch I have ever caught. If you want some good frying fish get you a Berry 1/2 oz white with blue tape or medium shiners and get to fishing. We caught them in 50 to 58 foot of water at the bottom. Good luck:sunglasses:
Where are you buying Berry Spoons?

Dooleyās or Lake World on the Lexington side. The sport & tool shop, sorry I canāt remember the name, in Ballentine used to have them, Iām not sure if they still do. Sportsmanās Warehouse also used to stock a few of them. I usually try to buy atleast a dozen each fall. I prefer the 1/2 ounce white/silver reflector. In muddy water the chartreuse is hard to beat. I caught between 40 and 50 lbs. in 1 1/2 hours on Christmas afternoon. Had some nice catfish in with the perch. They were around 38ā deep in the elbow area. I plan to catch them again Saturday. If you canāt find Berry spoons the silver 3/8 ounce Cotton Cordell spoons will catch some too. There is also a L&S or L&M spoon that is similar to the Berry that will catch them.
Thanks. Iāll go see Richard or Monte.

Tried the perch in the elbow area. Water was as muddy as I have ever seen. Tried several usually good spots, various depths and different spoons. Never got a bite. Muddy water is bad. Cold muddy water is worse. Was going to try a few other spots but the big motor started losing power. Gave up and limped back to the dock. If it was any muddier the beavers would be leaving tracks in the water.
Muddy way below the elbow, right around Macedonia and up. Fished from 11 AM to 2 PM around little gap. Got one largemouth two good keepers and one short. Used shad on DR suspended 35 feet on 40-45 feet of water. Happy new year and good fishing for all.

A dumb question, but are you talking about white perch or yellow perch(aka sand trout, eisenhowers, red finned perch)?
And I am curious, what do you consider a big one? In the past while crappie fishing, Iāve caught white perch that were around 1/2lb. but nothing bigger.

White Perch 3/4 lb and above. The big ones that we are catching are female with eggs.
White perch. The yellow perch donāt seem to thrive in Murray and are usually very small. Biggest white perch Iāve caught was 1 1/2 lbs. Thatās still pretty nice when you consider the SC record is less than 2 lbs. The white perch also bite small crankbaits when theyāre shallow. Cutbait, crappie jigs, small in-line spinners, minnows and worms will also catch them.
Thanks guys. I have fished Lake Murray all my life (53 Years old) and have never targeted white perch but probably have caught hundreds accidently and, like I said before, never caught one over about 1/2 lb. that I can remember. I need to change that.

Ok Johnā¦Whenās the fish fry? Iāll bring the beer.
I walked down to the toonboat this morning planning to see how muddy the water was. While I was there I noticed that the toothy critter has struck again. This time it chewed up the battery cables as well as the wiring harness going under the boat to the console. I guess Iāll try a live animal trap before I attempt anymore repairs to the wiring. The water in the elbow area is still very muddy so Iām in no hurry to try perch fishing up here.
Reads like the upper part of Murray has gotten like the upper part of Cherokee, Tennessee-- cold and muddy. We were skunked on our trip after 2&1/2 days of trying everything we knew. We downrodded, jerked spoons, pulled planers, trolled rigs, and wished dynamite was legal:smiley: The lake came up 3 feet with 44 degree muddy water while we were up there. It was plenty clear enough down by the the dam, but the biomass seemed to be at German Creek and above. The fish were lockjawed! We covered atleast 60 miles by boat looking for a bite⦠Hopefully Murray will clear some by the weekend, but rain is expected tonight and tomorrow.
